Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

NOTE: The VAG 1552 Scan Tool can be used instead of the VAG 1551, however; the VAG 1552 is not equipped with a printer.

Special Tools, Testers And Auxiliary Items:
- VAG 1551 Scan Tool with adaptor cable VAG 1551/3

Checking:
- Connect VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool
- Start engine and let idle
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select address word 01 "engine electronics"

If engine cannot be started:
- Switch ON ignition
- Switch on Scan Tool printer using the print button
- print button must light up
Display will appear as shown:

- Operate Scan Tool taking displayed information into account
- Press 0 and 2 buttons to select Function 02 "check DTC memory
- Press Q button to enter selection
Display will appear as shown:

X DTCs recognized!


The number of DTCs stored or "No DTC recognized" will be shown on the display.

If one or more DTCs are stored, they will be displayed/printed out one after the other.

After stored DTCs have been displayed/printed out, Scan Tool display will appear as shown:

NOTE: The Scan Tool is required (partially) for additional DTC checking, therefore leave the engine running and the Scan Tool connected.

- Eliminate the printed out DTCs using the appropriate table.
- Afterwards, erase DTC memory
- Create readiness code
- Display the readiness

If DTC memory has been erased:
- Create readiness code again

If no DTC is stored:
- Press the -> button
Display will appear as shown:

- Press 0 and 6 buttons to select Function 06 "end data transfer"
- Press Q button to enter selection
