EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve, Checking
Recommended special tools and equipment
- VA.G 1526 multimeter or V.A.G 1715 multimeter
- V.A.G 1594 connector test kit
- Wiring diagram
Requirements
- The respective fuses of Diesel-Direct fuel injection system must be OK.
- Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 volts.
- No leaks on intake or exhaust side.
- Vacuum hoses must be properly sealed.
- All electrical consumers such as, lights and rear window defroster must be switched off.
- For vehicles with automatic transmission, selector lever must be in position -P- or -N-
- Ground (GND) connections between engine and chassis must be OK.
- If vehicle is equipped with an A/C system, it must be switched off.
- Ignition is switched off.
Vehicles with engine code BEW
- EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve -N18- with Potentiometer for EGR -G212- must be OK mechanically and clean, check. removing and installing EGR system components.
- Potentiometer for EGR -G212- must be OK, check.
Checking EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve:
- Test sequence for vehicles with engine code ALH.
- Test sequence for vehicles with engine code BEW.
Test sequence (Vehicles with engine code ALH )
- Disconnect connector at solenoid valve for Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR).
- Measure resistance between terminals of valve.
Specified value: 14 to 20 Ohms
NOTE: Resistance at room temperature is in lower specified range, resistance at operating temperature is in upper specified range.
If specified value is not obtained:
- Replace EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve -N18-.
- Erase DTC memory of control module for Diesel-Direct fuel injection system. Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data. Diagnostic Mode 4: Reset/Erase Diagnostic Data
- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
If specified value is obtained:
- Switch ignition on.
- Measure voltage supply of valve at connector terminal 1 and at engine Ground (GND).
Specified value: approx. battery voltage
- Switch ignition off.
If specified value is not obtained:
- Check wires to Diesel Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) Engine Control Module (ECM) -J248- according to wiring diagram.
Check wires to control module
- Connect test box to control module wiring harness. connect test box for wiring test. Test Box, Connecting For Wiring Test
Vehicles with 80-pin control module
- Check for open circuits in wires between test box and harness connector according to wiring diagram.
Terminal 1 + socket 2 + 28
Terminal 2 + socket 29
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
Vehicles with 121-pin control module
- Check wires between test box and connector for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Terminal 1 + socket 1 and 2
Terminal 2 + socket 61
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
Continue for all vehicles
- Check wires for short circuit to each other, to vehicle Ground (GND) and to B+.
Specified value: Infinite Ohms
If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Replace Diesel Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) Engine Control Module (ECM) -J248-.
- Generate readiness code.
Test sequence (Vehicles with engine code BEW)
- Disconnect 6-pin connector (arrow) from EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve -N18- with Potentiometer for EGR G212-.
- Check resistance of EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve -N18- at terminals 2 + 6.
Specified value: 4.0 to 8.0 Ohms
If specified value is not obtained:
- Replace EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve -N18- with Potentiometer for EGR -G212-.
- Erase DTC memory of control module for Diesel-Direct fuel injection system. Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data. Diagnostic Mode 4: Reset/Erase Diagnostic Data
- Perform a basic setting of EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve -N18- with Potentiometer for EGR -G212-. Basic Setting of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve
- Generate readiness code.
If specified value is obtained:
- Check wires to Diesel Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) Engine Control Module (ECM) -J248- according to wiring diagram.
Check wires to control module
- Connect test box (1598/42) to Diesel Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) Engine Control Module (ECM) -J248- wiring harness using adapter cable (V.A.G 1598/39-1). connecting test box for wiring test. Test Box, Connecting For Wiring Test
- Check wires between test box and connector for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Terminal 2 + socket 49
Terminal 6 + socket 50
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Check wires for short circuit to each other, to vehicle Ground (GND) and to B+.
Specified value: Infinite Ohms
If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Replace Diesel Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) Engine Control Module (ECM) -J248-.
- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
