Front Engine Plate: Service and Repair

Sealing Flange, Belt Pulley Side

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Counter-holder tool (3099)

• Assembly tool (T10053)

• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1332)

• Hand drill with plastic brush attachment

• Flat scraper

• Protective glasses

• Silicone sealant (D 176 404 A)

Removing

- Remove toothed belt => [ Toothed Belt ] Toothed Belt.

- Remove the toothed belt crankshaft sprocket. Lock the toothed belt sprocket with the counter support (3099).





• When fastening the counter support, place two washers between the toothed belt gear and counter support.

- Drain engine oil.

- Remove oil pan => [ Oil Pan ] Oil Pan.

- Unbolt the sealing flange.

- Remove the sealing flange and if necessary loosen by applying light strikes with a rubber hammer.

Drive out sealing ring with the sealing flange removed.

- Remove sealant residue from cylinder block with a flat scraper.

- Remove sealant residue from sealing flange using a rotating plastic brush (wear safety glasses).





- Clean sealing surfaces. They must be free of oil and grease.

Installing

• Note the expiration date of the sealing compound.

• The sealing flange must be installed within 5 minutes after application of silicone sealant.

- Before installing, remove oil remains from end of crankshaft with a clean cloth.

- Cut off the nozzle on the tube of sealant at the front mark (diameter of nozzle approximately 3 mm).





• The sealing compound bead must not be thicker than 2 to 3 mm, otherwise excess sealing compound could enter the oil pan and may block the oil suction pipe strainer. Likewise, it could drip onto the sealing surface of the crankshaft seal.

• Before applying the bead of sealant, cover the sealing surface of the seal with a clean rag.

- Apply silicone sealing compound bead - arrow - as illustrated to clean sealing surface of sealing flange.





- Install sealing flange immediately and tighten all bolts lightly.

• To position sealing flange with sealing ring installed, use guide sleeve (T10053/1).

- Tighten bolts of sealing flange in diagonal sequence to 15 Nm.

- Install a new sealing ring => [ Crankshaft Seal, Belt Pulley Side ] Service and Repair.

- Install oil pan => [ Oil Pan ] Oil Pan.

• After installing, allow sealant to dry for approximately 30 minutes. Only after then may the engine oil be replenished.

- Toothed belt, installing and tensioning => [ Toothed Belt ] Toothed Belt.
