Transmission Cooler: Service and Repair
Transmission Oil Cooler
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Hose Clamps Up to 25 mm dia. (3094)
• Torque Wrench 5-50 Nm (V.A.G 1331)
• Pliers for spring-type clamps (VAS 5024 A)
Removing
• Observe notes for Direct Shift Automatic Transmission 02E => [ Notes for Direct Shift Automatic Transmission 02E ] Notes For Direct Shift Automatic Transmission 02E.
• Observe general repair notes for working on the transmission => [ General Repair Notes ] General Repair Notes.
• Additional work must be performed when disconnecting and reconnecting battery.
- Place selector lever in position "P".
- First determine whether a coded radio is installed. In this case, determine anti-theft coding.
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) cable with ignition switched off.
• Observe safety precautions before disconnecting the battery.
- Remove power steering refill tank from battery console, do not kink hoses while doing this.
- Connect refill tank to lock carrier.
- Remove battery
- Disconnect intake hose - 1 - and connector - 2 - from Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
- Remove bolts - 3 - and - 4 -.
- Remove air filter completely.
- Place lint-free cloth on to oil cooler and transmission to absorb exiting coolant.
- Clamp off hoses of transmission oil cooler using Hose Clamps Up to 25 mm dia. (3094).
- Open clamps - 1 - using (VAS 5024 A) and disconnect hoses from transmission oil cooler.
- Remove bolts - A - and oil cooler - B -.
- Bolts must be replaced.
CAUTION!
Coolant must not drip into transmission.
- Remove transmission oil cooler - B - together with both O-rings - C - from transmission.
Installing
Installation is in reverse order of removal, note the following:
- Replace O-rings - C - of transmission oil cooler - B -.
- Install oil cooler - B -, pay attention to O-rings - C - when doing this.
- Install new bolts - A - and tighten to 20 Nm plus an additional 90° (1/4 turn).
- Connect battery and observe safety precautions after connecting battery.
- Check coolant level in cooling system.
CAUTION!
Do not start engine during coolant level test if there is still no transmission oil filling.
- After repairs, fill with transmission oil without replacing filter => [ Transmission Oil and Filter ] Transmission Oil and Filter.
