Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair
Multi-Function Transmission Range Switch
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque wrench (5-50 Nm) (VAG 1331)
- Place the selector lever in the "N" position.
- Switch the ignition off.
- DO NOT open the cooling system.
- Disconnect the selector lever cable - 1 - from the cable mounting bracket - 2 - and remove it.
Handle with care and make sure not to kink the cable. Do not use pliers, otherwise retainer straps on the cable mounting bracket may break off.
- Pry off the cable - 1 - from the lever - 3 - using an open end wrench - 2 -.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the multi-function transmission range switch (F125).
- Remove the nut - 1 -.
- Remove the spring washer - 2 - and lever - 3 - from the shift rod - 4 -.
- Bend the hooks of the locking washer - 2 - back using a screwdriver.
- Replace the locking washer if the hooks are broken off.
- Remove the nut - 1 -.
- Remove the bolts - 5 -.
- Remove the multi-function switch - 4 - with washers - 2 and 3 - from the shift rod - 6 -.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Pay attention to the following:
- Install the multi-function switch - 4 - to the shift rod - 6 -.
- Hand tighten the bolts - 5 - for the multi-function switch.
- Bend the hooks on the locking washer - 2 - back.
- Install washers - 2 and 3 - onto the shift rod - 6 -.
- Install the washer - 2 - with the hooks facing upward.
- Install the washer - 2 - with the long and thin guides into the long and narrow depressions in the shift rod - 6 -.
- Tighten the nut - 1 - to 7 Nm.
- Secure the nut - 1 - by bending the hooks of the locking washer - 2 - upward.
- Replace the locking washer if the hooks are broken off.
- Install the lever - 3 - onto the shift rod - 4 -.
- Move the selector lever - 3 - into the "P" position. This means, push the selector lever - 3 - opposite the drive direction until it stops.
- Shift the transmission to the "N" position using the lever - 3 -. To do so, press the lever - 3 - two latched positions toward the front in direction of travel.
- Install the spring washer - 2 - and nut - 1 - on the shift rod - 4 -.
- Tighten the nut - 1 - to 13 Nm.
6 Cylinder Gas Vehicles
- Install the coolant reservoir.
- Connect the battery ground (GND) cable with the ignition off.
