• Secure engine to Engine and Transmission Holder (VAS 6095) when working on engine. Refer to => [ Engine, Securing to ] Procedures.
• If large quantities of metal particles or abraded material are detected during engine repairs, it may mean the crankshaft or rod bearings are damaged. To prevent further damage, perform the following steps after the repair:
• Clean the oil channels.
• Replace the oil spray jets.
• Replace the oil cooler.
• Replace the oil filter.
1 Control Housing
• Markings on control housing, refer to => [ Marks on Control Housing ] Adjustments.
• Lightly lubricate contact surfaces of seals before installing
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Camshafts ] Service and Repair.
• Disassembling and assembling, refer to => [ Control Housing Disassembling and Assembling ] Service and Repair.
• Check control housing strainer for contamination before installation, refer to => [ Control Housing, Checking Strainer for Contaminants ] Service and Repair.
2 Bolt
• 8 Nm
• Insert using locking fluid (D 000 600 A2)
3 Camshaft Timing Chain
• Mark direction of rotation before removing (installation position), refer to => [ Timing Chain Marks ].
• Installing, refer to => [ Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing ] Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing.
4 Exhaust Camshaft Adjuster
• Identification: 32A
• Only rotate engine with camshaft adjuster installed
• Installing, refer to => [ Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing ] Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing.
5 Intermediate Shaft
6 Tensioning Rail
• For the camshaft timing chain => [ (Item 3) Camshaft Timing Chain ]
7 Pivot Pin
• 18 Nm
8 Chain Tensioner
• 40 Nm
• For the camshaft timing chain => [ (Item 3) Camshaft Timing Chain ]
• Only rotate engine with chain tensioner installed
9 Seal
• Replace if damaged or leaking
10 Chain Sprocket
• For roller chain => [ (Item 15) Timing Chain ]
• Installing, refer to => [ Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing ] Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing.
11 Chain Sprocket
• For the camshaft timing chain => [ (Item 3) Camshaft Timing Chain ]
• Installing, refer to => [ Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing ] Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing.
12 Bolt
• Replace
• 60 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
• Use counter-holder tool (T10069) to tighten and loosen. Refer to => [ Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing ] Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing.
13 Chain Tensioner with Tensioning Rail
• For roller chain => [ (Item 15) Timing Chain ]
• Before installation release the locking device in the chain tensioner with a small screwdriver and press the tensioning plate against the chain tensioner
• Only rotate the engine with chain tensioner installed
14 Drive Sprocket
• Integral part of crankshaft
• The milled tooth aligns with the crankshaft bearing cap joint = cylinder 1 Top Dead Center (TDC). Refer to => [ Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing ] Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing.
15 Timing Chain
• Mark direction of rotation before removing (installation position). Refer to => [ Timing Chain Marks ].

16 Guide Rail
• Remove and install together with roller chain. Refer to => [ Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing ] Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing
17 Locating Pin without Collar
• 10 Nm
• For glide track => [ (Item 16) Guide Rail ]
18 Pivot Pin
• 18 Nm
19 Bolt

20 Intake Camshaft Adjuster
• Identification: 24E
• Only rotate engine with camshaft adjuster installed
• Installing, refer to => [ Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing ] Intermediate Shaft and Timing Chains, Installing.
21 Bolt
• Replace
• 60 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn
• Bolt head contact surface of the adjuster must be dry when installing.
• To remove and install, counter hold at the camshaft using a 32 mm open end wrench. Refer to=> [ Camshafts ] Service and Repair.
22 Guide Rail
• For the camshaft timing chain => [ (Item 3) Camshaft Timing Chain ]
23 Exhaust Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 (N318)
• For exhaust camshaft
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Camshaft Adjuster Valves ] Camshaft Adjuster Valves
• Mark the connector belonging to the component before disconnecting
24 Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 (N205)
• For intake camshaft
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Camshaft Adjuster Valves ] Camshaft Adjuster Valves.
• Mark the connector belonging to the component before disconnecting
25 Guide Rail
• For the camshaft timing chain
• Clipped in at control housing
Timing Chain Marks
- Mark the chains before removing (for example, with a arrow (in paint) pointing in the direction of rotation).
• Do not mark chain using a center punch or similar means!
Part II: Cylinder Block and Lubrication Components Overview

• Secured by a bolt - item 3 - to the intake manifold.
6 Cylinder Block
• Removing and installing sealing flange and dual-mass flywheel. Refer to => [ Dual Mass Flywheel ] Dual Mass Flywheel.
• Crankshaft, removing and installing, refer to => [ Crankshaft Overview ] Crankshaft Overview.

7 Knock Sensor (KS) 1 (G61)
• Installed location: Between cylinders 1 and 3

• Tightening specification affects the function of the KS.

• Lubricate before assembling.

• For the generator, Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor, and power steering pump.
27 Vibration Damper

28 Bolt
• 100 Nm + 180° (1/2) additional turn.
