Water Pump: Service and Repair
Coolant Pump
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine Support Bridge (10 - 222 A)
• Refractometer (T10007)
• Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)
• Spring Type Clip Pliers (VAS 5024 A)
Removing
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Remove the pendulum support.
- Drain the coolant. Refer to => [ Draining and Filling ] Draining and Filling.
- Remove the ribbed belt. Refer to => [ Ribbed Belt ] Ribbed Belt.
- Install the (10 - 222 A) with (10 - 222 A/1) as shown and support the engine in the installed position at the right lifting eye.
- Remove the engine mount to engine mount bracket bolts - arrows -.
- Lower the engine using (10 - 222 A) just enough until it is possible to remove the coolant pump.
- Remove the coolant pump pulley bolts. To do so, counter hold the pulley using a drift.
- Remove the coolant pump bolts - 1 - and then remove the coolant pump - 2 -.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal, noting the following:
- Lubricate the new O-ring with coolant.
- Install the coolant pump.
- Tighten the coolant pump bolts to 8 Nm
- Install the coolant pump pulley and bolts, tighten the bolts to 20 Nm.
- Raise the engine using (10 - 222 A) and secure it with new bolts, tightening them by hand.
- Align the engine mount as follows:
• There must be a distance of at least 10 mm - a - present between the engine mount bracket - 2 - and right longitudinal member.
• The casting edge on the engine mount bracket - 2 - must be parallel to the engine mount arm - 1 -.
- Tighten new engine mount to engine mount bracket bolts to : 60 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
- Install the pendulum support.

- Install the ribbed belt. Refer to => [ Ribbed Belt ] Ribbed Belt.
- Fill the cooling system. Refer to => [ Draining and Filling ] Draining and Filling.
