Generation II Haldex Clutch Oil Level, Checking and Filling
High performance oil for the Haldex clutch is available as a replacement part.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Vehicle diagnostic, testing, and information system. (VAS 5051)
• Diagnostic cable, 3 m with power supply (VAS 5051/1) or diagnostic cable, 5 m without power supply (VAS 5051/3)
• Charging device for Haldex 2 couplings (VAS 6291)
Prerequisites
• The oil temperature must be between 20 and 40 °C.
• Vehicle must be on a flat surface
• Oil temperature can be obtained by driving vehicle to warm it.
- Connect the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system (VAS 5051).
- Select "Suspension (Rep. - Gr. 01; 40 to 49)" off.
- Select "All Wheel Drive with Haldex clutch" on the display.
- Select "01 - On Board Diagnostic capable systems" on the display.
- Select "All Wheel Drive Haldex" on the display.
- Select "Electrical components" on the display.
- Select "Oil temperature" on the display.
Vehicles With a Crossmember
- Cover the crossmember with a cloth.
If oil gets on the crossmember or enters the perforations in the crossmember, it must be removed.
Checking
- Place the drip tray (VAS 6208) under the rear final drive.
- Remove oil fill plug - arrow -. (Shown with final drive removed for the sake of a better illustration).
The oil level is correct if the Haldex clutch is filled to the lower edge of the oil fill plug hole or up to 3 mm below the oil fill hole.
- Install the fill plug and tighten. Tightening specification: 15 Nm.
Filling
Requirements
• Vehicle must be on a flat surface
- Fill with high performance Haldex clutch oil.
High performance oil for the Haldex clutch is available as a replacement part.
- Raise vehicle.
Vehicles with a Crossmember
- Cover the crossmember with a cloth.
If oil gets on the crossmember or enters the perforations in the crossmember, it must be removed.
- Use the charging device for Haldex 2 couplings (VAS 6291) to add oil.
- Place the drip tray (VAS 6208) under the rear final drive.
- Remove the oil fill plug - arrow -. (Shown with final drive removed for the sake of a better illustration).
- Install adapter - A - to until seated.
- Engage elbow - B - with adapter - A -.
- Route hose over axle shaft.
• Hose must not hang through. It must enter above left rear wheel on vehicle.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Make sure valve - arrow - is closed.
- Install the oil container - A - on the charging device for Haldex 2 couplings (VAS 6291).
- Now open valve - arrow - and hold oil container as shown in illustration.
Haldex clutch is now filled.
- Raise vehicle after a few minutes.
• If the bevel box is filled correctly, oil should leak out from the adapter - A -.
• If no oil is leaking, lower vehicle and perform filling procedure again.
- Raise vehicle.
- If oil is leaking, place an oil container under the Haldex clutch (for example, on a workshop cart).
Overflowing oil now runs back into oil container.
- If no more oil runs back, remove the charging device for Haldex 2 couplings (VAS 6291).
- Install the fill plug - arrow - and tighten. Tightening specification: 15 Nm.
- Finally, check oil level in Haldex clutch.
