Generation II Haldex Clutch Oil Level, Checking and Filling

High performance oil for the Haldex clutch is available as a replacement part.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

Vehicle diagnostic, testing, and information system. (VAS 5051)

Diagnostic cable, 3 m with power supply (VAS 5051/1) or diagnostic cable, 5 m without power supply (VAS 5051/3)

Charging device for Haldex 2 couplings (VAS 6291)

Prerequisites

The oil temperature must be between 20 and 40 °C.

Vehicle must be on a flat surface

Oil temperature can be obtained by driving vehicle to warm it.

- Connect the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system (VAS 5051).

- Select "Suspension (Rep. - Gr. 01; 40 to 49)" off.

- Select "All Wheel Drive with Haldex clutch" on the display.

- Select "01 - On Board Diagnostic capable systems" on the display.

- Select "All Wheel Drive Haldex" on the display.

- Select "Electrical components" on the display.

- Select "Oil temperature" on the display.

Vehicles With a Crossmember

- Cover the crossmember with a cloth.





If oil gets on the crossmember or enters the perforations in the crossmember, it must be removed.

Checking

- Place the drip tray (VAS 6208) under the rear final drive.

- Remove oil fill plug - arrow -. (Shown with final drive removed for the sake of a better illustration).





The oil level is correct if the Haldex clutch is filled to the lower edge of the oil fill plug hole or up to 3 mm below the oil fill hole.

- Install the fill plug and tighten. Tightening specification: 15 Nm.

Filling

Requirements

Vehicle must be on a flat surface

- Fill with high performance Haldex clutch oil.

High performance oil for the Haldex clutch is available as a replacement part.

- Raise vehicle.

Vehicles with a Crossmember

- Cover the crossmember with a cloth.





If oil gets on the crossmember or enters the perforations in the crossmember, it must be removed.

- Use the charging device for Haldex 2 couplings (VAS 6291) to add oil.

- Place the drip tray (VAS 6208) under the rear final drive.

- Remove the oil fill plug - arrow -. (Shown with final drive removed for the sake of a better illustration).





- Install adapter - A - to until seated.





- Engage elbow - B - with adapter - A -.

- Route hose over axle shaft.

Hose must not hang through. It must enter above left rear wheel on vehicle.

- Lower the vehicle.

- Make sure valve - arrow - is closed.





- Install the oil container - A - on the charging device for Haldex 2 couplings (VAS 6291).

- Now open valve - arrow - and hold oil container as shown in illustration.

Haldex clutch is now filled.

- Raise vehicle after a few minutes.

If the bevel box is filled correctly, oil should leak out from the adapter - A -.

If no oil is leaking, lower vehicle and perform filling procedure again.





- Raise vehicle.

- If oil is leaking, place an oil container under the Haldex clutch (for example, on a workshop cart).

Overflowing oil now runs back into oil container.

- If no more oil runs back, remove the charging device for Haldex 2 couplings (VAS 6291).

- Install the fill plug - arrow - and tighten. Tightening specification: 15 Nm.





- Finally, check oil level in Haldex clutch.
