Flange Shaft Seals

Example of the Identification on a "02D" Rear Final Drive





The marking - arrow - on the bottom side of the rear final drive identifies which final drive is installed.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Extractor lever (VW 681)

Plate from the puller (T10037)

Thrust piece (T10049)

Drip tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)

Sealing grease (G 052 128 A1)

Removing

Do not remove the rear final drive for this.

This procedure applies to both sides.

- Remove the drive axle.

- Place the drip tray under rear final drive.

Flange Shaft, Removing

- Install the plate - A - from the puller (T10037) on the flange and tighten the two M8 x 30 bolts - 1 - by hand.





The sections - arrows - for the larger flange diameter face outward.

- Tighten one turn each in an alternating sequence until the flange contacts the plate - arrows - and then stop tightening.





CAUTION!
Wear gloves to get a good grip on the flange.

Drive the flange out of the final drive by tapping lightly on the plate - arrow -.





CAUTION!
Only use a plastic mallet so the final drive and tool are not damaged.

- Pry out the flange shaft seal with the extractor lever (VW 681).





Installing

- Lightly lubricate the outer diameter of the new seal and drive in, without tilting until seated using the thrust piece (T10049).





- Fill the area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing grease (G 052 128 A1).

Circlip, Replacing

- Clamp the flange shaft using jaw protectors in a vise.





- Press the previous circlip out of flange shaft groove with the new circlip - A -.

- Drive in the flange shaft with a plastic hammer and possibly drift.

- Install the drive axle.

- Check the oil level in the rear final drive. Refer to => [ Rear Final Drive Oil Level, Checking and Filling ] Procedures.
