Timing Chain Tensioner: Service and Repair
Camshaft Timing Chain Tensioner
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Old oil collecting and extracting device (VAG 1782)
• Even if work is performed only on one of the cylinder heads, the procedure described must be followed, since then the valve timing at both cylinder heads must be adjusted.
Removing
- Remove engine. Refer to --> [ Engine, Removing ] Engine Removing.
- Separate engine and transmission. Refer to --> [ Separating transmission from engine ] Engine Removing.
- Secure engine on the engine and transmission holder (VAS 6095). Refer to --> [ Engine, Securing on Engine and Transmission Holder ] Engine, Securing on Engine and Transmission Holder.
- Remove drive plate. Refer to --> [ Drive Plate ] Drive Plate.
- Remove the cylinder head cover: Left, refer to --> [ Left Cylinder Head Cover ] Left Cylinder Head Cover and right, refer to --> [ Right Cylinder Head Cover ] Right Cylinder Head Cover.
- Remove left and right timing chain covers. Refer to --> [ Left and Right Timing Chain Covers ] Left and Right Timing Chain Covers.
- Remove intake manifold. Refer to --> [ Intake Manifold ] Intake Manifold.
- Remove oil filter housing. Refer to --> [ Oil Filter Housing ] Oil Filter Housing.
- Remove lower timing chain cover. Refer to --> [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.
- Remove camshaft timing chains from camshafts. Refer to --> [ Camshaft Timing Chains, Removing from Camshafts ] Camshaft Timing Chains, Removing From Camshafts.
- Mark running direction of left camshaft timing chain with paint.
- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 - and remove left chain tensioner and left camshaft timing chain.
- Mark running direction of right camshaft timing chain with paint.
- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 - and remove right chain tensioner and right camshaft timing chain.
Installing
• If the tensioning element is to be removed from the chain tensioner, observe the installed position: Hole in housing floor faces toward chain tensioner, piston faces toward tensioning rail.
• Replace bolts which have been tightened to specification.
CAUTION!
When turning camshaft crankshaft must not be at Top Dead Center (TDC) for any cylinder. Valves and/or pistons may be damaged.
- Press left and right camshaft timing chain guide rail inward - arrow - until seated and secure chain tensioner with locking pin (T40071).
- Clean oil strainer - 2 - in both chain tensioners if necessary.
- Place a new gasket - 3 - onto the rear of the chain tensioner - 1 -.
- Insert chain tensioner in left cylinder head and position camshaft timing chain according to mark applied during removal, as shown in illustration.
- Tighten bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.
- Insert chain tensioner in right cylinder head and position camshaft timing chain according to mark applied during removal, as shown in illustration.
- Tighten bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.
Further installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
- Position camshaft timing chains on camshafts. Refer to --> [ Installing ] Camshaft Timing Chains, Removing From Camshafts.
- Install lower timing chain cover. Refer to --> [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.
- Install oil filter housing. Refer to --> [ Oil Filter Housing ] Oil Filter Housing.
- Install intake manifold. Refer to --> [ Intake Manifold ] Intake Manifold.
- Install left and right timing chain covers. Refer to --> [ Installing ] Left and Right Timing Chain Covers.
- Install cylinder head cover: Left, refer to --> [ Left Cylinder Head Cover ] Left Cylinder Head Cover and right, refer to --> [ Right Cylinder Head Cover ] Right Cylinder Head Cover.
- Install drive plate. Refer to --> [ Drive Plate ] Drive Plate.
- Install engine. Refer to --> [ Engine, Installing ] Engine Installing.
- Add engine oil and check oil level. Refer to --> [ Oil Level, Inspection ] Testing and Inspection.
