Shift Linkage: Service and Repair






Selector Lever Cable, through 02.09

After installation, the cable movement must be checked and adjusted.

Removing

- Move the selector lever into the "S" position.






Loosen the adjusting bolt - arrow -.






Use pliers to remove the lock washer - B -. Do not use a sharp edged tool. This could damage the rubber grommet.

- Remove the lock washers - A and B -. The lock washers must be replaced when adjusting the cable.

- Lift the vehicle.

- The heat shield under the shift mechanism and possibly the exhaust system components must be removed to remove the cable and/or selector mechanism.

- Remove the selector housing nuts and housing from under the selector lever.






- Remove the retaining plate from the cable bracket. Always replace the retaining plate.






The selector housing is pushed forward on the cable.






The locking strap must be pushed forward in order to remove the cable - 1 -.






- Push the pin upward with a screwdriver at the same time - 2 -.

- Insert the screwdriver from underneath while pushing the locking strap forward.






For clarity:

- 1 - push the strap forward

- 2 - push the pin upward






- Remove the selector lever cable.






Remove the selector housing from the cable

Installing

Do not grease the cable.

- Route the selector lever cable making sure it is free of tension. Install is also into the cable bracket on the transmission. Do not secure yet with the lock washers. Do not install onto the ball head.

- When installing, make sure the selector lever cable is routed correctly.






If the plate underneath is bent, there will be noises. The cable will then flap on the plate.

- Pay attention to the plate. Push it upward into the tunnel in the - direction of the arrow -.

- Install the selector housing onto the cable.






- Install the selector lever cable into the selector mechanism.






- Insert the cable into the bracket and then insert the pin through the eye from the top

Install the retaining plate only after having checked the cable for ease of movement. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Checking ] Selector Lever Cable, Checking.

- Secure the cable with a new retaining plate to the cable bracket on the selector mechanism.






- Install the selector housing, the heat shield and the exhaust system.






- Check the cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Checking ] Selector Lever Cable, Checking.
