Final Drive, Differential (09G Transmission)

Flange Shaft Seal

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Drip tray (V.A.G 1306)

• Puller (T10055)

• Thrust piece (T10176)

Flange Shaft Seal, Removing

(Transmission in vehicle)

Only left side is described here. Replacing oil seal for right side is almost the same.

- On the right, drive axle remains in wheel bearing, use the thrust piece (T10177), on the left side, remove drive axle and use the thrust piece (T10176).

- Remove noise insulation.

- Place drip tray (V.A.G 1306) underneath.

- Mark position of nuts - arrows - used to secure lower control arm to suspension strut.





When assembling, this position should be found again if possible.

- Remove lower control arm from suspension strut.

- Press drive axle out of transmission.

Right:

- Place right drive axle as far upward as possible and secure it in this position.

Protective coating of shaft must not be damaged, thus cable ties made of plastic are very suitable.

Left:

• Do not set down vehicle on to floor.

- Press brake in order to remove drive axle left bolt - arrow - (second technician).





- Remove left drive axle.

- Seal opening of drive axle at transmission using clean rag - A -.





- Carefully drill a hole - B - (2 to 4 mm in size) into outer metal ring - C - of sealing ring.

• Grease drill bit - B - so that drill shavings remain held.

• Drill only through metal ring - C -, otherwise transmission may be damaged.

- Install metal bolt of approximately 4 mm in diameter in drilled hole of oil seal - arrow -.





• Do not screw in metal screw too deeply to prevent damage to bearing lying behind it.

- Pull out sealing ring using extractor (T10055) and adapter (T10055/2).

- Remove cloth and thoroughly clean transmission and opening for drive axle.

Iron shavings must not get into transmission and into opening for drive axle, vacuum up shavings if necessary.

If only the metal ring of sealing ring could be pulled out, carefully pry out remainder of the sealing ring using a screwdriver.

Flange Shaft Seal, Installing

Installation is in reverse order of removal. Pay attention to the following:

- Lubricate the outer circumference and sealing lips of the seal with ATF.

Installation position:

The open side of the sealing ring faces transmission.

- Press in seal by hand evenly as far as possible.

Left side

- Drive in sealing ring to stop using thrust piece (T10176), do not cant sealing ring while doing this.

Right side

- Drive in sealing ring to stop using thrust piece (T10177), do not cant sealing ring while doing this.

- Install drive axle.

- Then check ATF level and top off => [ ATF Level, Checking ] Testing and Inspection.

- Install noise insulation.
