Timing Chain: Service and Repair
Chain Drive Assembly Overview
1 Control Housing
• Markings on control housing, refer to => [ Control Housing Markings with Multi-Port Injection
(MPI) Engines ] Valve Timing, Checking.
• Lightly lubricate the contact surfaces of the oil seals before installing.
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Camshafts ] Service and Repair.
• Disassembling and assembling, refer to => [ Disassembling and assembling Control Housing ] Service and Repair.
• Check the control housing strainer for contamination before installing. Refer to => [ Checking Control Housing Strainer for Contamination ] Service and Repair.
2 Bolt, 8 Nm
• Install with locking fluid.
3 Camshaft Roller Chain
• Mark the direction of rotation before removing (installed position). Refer to => [ Roller Chain, Marking ].
• Installing, refer to => [ Valve Timing, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
4 Exhaust Camshaft Adjuster
• Identification: 32A.
• Only rotate the engine with the camshaft adjuster installed.
• Installing, refer to => [ Valve Timing, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
5 Intermediate Shaft
6 Tensioning Rail
• For the camshaft roller chain - item 3 -.
7 Pivot Pin, 18 Nm
8 Chain Tensioner, 40 Nm
• For the camshaft roller chain - item 3 -.
• Only rotate the engine with the chain tensioner installed.
9 Seal
• Replace if damaged or leaking.
10 Intermediate Shaft Chain Sprocket
• For the intermediate shaft roller chain - item 15 -
• Installing, refer to => [ Valve Timing, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
11 Chain Sprocket
• For the camshaft roller chain - item 3 -.
• Installing, refer to => [ Valve Timing, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
12 Bolt, 60 Nm + 90° (1/4) addition turn
• Always replace.
• Use the counter holder tool (T10069) to tighten and loosen. Refer to => [ Valve Timing, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
13 Chain Tensioner with Tensioning Rail
• For the intermediate shaft roller chain - item 15 -.
• Before installation, release the locking device in the chain tensioner with a small screwdriver and press the tensioning plate against the chain tensioner.
• Only rotate the engine with the chain tensioner installed.
14 Crankshaft Drive Gear
• Integral part of the crankshaft.
• Ground down tooth aligned with the main bearing joint = Top Dead Center (TDC) cylinder 1. Refer to => [ Valve Timing, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
15 Intermediate Shaft Roller Chain
• Mark the direction of rotation before removing (installed position). Refer to => [ Roller Chain, Marking ].
• Installing, refer to => [ Valve Timing, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
16 Guide Rail
• Remove and install together with the intermediate shaft roller chain. Refer to => [ Valve Timing, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
17 Locating Pin without Collar, 10 Nm
• For the guide rail - item 16 -
18 Pivot Pin, 18 Nm
19 Bolt, 23 Nm
20 Intake Camshaft Adjuster
• Identification: 24E.
• Only rotate the engine with the camshaft adjuster installed.
• Installing, refer to => [ Valve Timing, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
21 Bolt, 60 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn
• Always replace.
• The contact surface of the sensor wheel and bolt head must be dry when installing.
• To remove and install, counter hold the camshaft using an 32 mm open end wrench. Refer to => [ Camshafts ] Service and Repair.
22 Guide Rail
• For the camshaft roller chain - item 3 -
23 Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 (Exhaust) (N318)
• For the exhaust camshaft.
• Before disconnecting, mark the allocation of the electrical connector to the component.
24 Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 (N205)
• For the intake camshaft.
• Before disconnecting, mark the allocation of the electrical connector to the component
25 Guide Rail
• For the camshaft roller chain - item 3 -.
• Clipped onto the control housing.
Roller Chain, Marking
- Mark the roller chains before removing (for example, using paint, place a arrow pointing in direction of rotation).
• Do not mark the chain using a center punch or similar means!
