Steering Column Switches

Steering Column Switches

CAUTION!
When disconnecting and connecting the battery, the procedure must be followed as described in the Repair information. Refer to --> [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] .

While removing the steering column switches, ensure that no shavings enter steering column switches when drilling the shear bolts.

Removing

When removing the complete steering column switches including base carrier, it is disassembled and steering lock housing is also removed with it. New shear bolts are required for installing steering lock housing. Also, if only one individual component of steering column switch is removed or replaced, the sequence described in the following must always be adhered to.

- Disconnect the battery. Refer to --> [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] .

- Remove the steering wheel.

- Remove the steering column trim.

Remove steering column switch assembly components in the following sequence:

Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module (J527). Refer to --> [ Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module ].

Airbag Spiral Spring/Return Spring With Slip Ring (F138). Refer to --> [ Airbag Spiral Spring/Return Spring With Slip Ring ].

Steering Angle Sensor (G85). Refer to --> [ Steering Angle Sensor ].

Turn signal switch. Refer to --> [ Turn Signal Switch ].

Windshield Wiper Switch (E). Refer to --> [ Windshield Wiper Switch ].

Base carrier for steering column switches. Refer to --> [ Steering Column Switch Base Plate ].

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal.

Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module

After installing a new Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module (J527), it must be coded. Refer to --> [ Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module, Coding ] Programming and Relearning.

If malfunctions occur at steering column switch, coding of Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module (J527) must be checked. Refer to --> [ Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module, Coding ] Programming and Relearning.

Removing

- Remove bolt - 1 -.

CAUTION!
Do NOT try to remove the Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module (J527) without loosening the center securing clip as described in the next step. The Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module (J527) would be damaged.

- On the Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module (J527), slide e.g. a wire or a drill dia. 2.5 mm - 2 - approximately 45 mm into hole - arrow 1 -, whereby the retaining detent is released - arrow 2 -.

- Using a screwdriver, press against the rear securing clip - arrow - of Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module (J527).

- Carefully pull Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module (J527) downward from steering column switches.

- Disengage - arrow A - harness connector - 1 - and disconnect it from Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module (J527).

- Remove securing latch - 3 - from harness connector.

- Disengage lock - arrow B - on electrical connection - 2 - and disconnect from Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module (J527).

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

Make sure the pins are not bent and that the connector audibly engages.

Airbag Spiral Spring/Return Spring With Slip Ring

CAUTION!
When removing, the Airbag Spiral Spring/Return Spring With Slip Ring (F138) must not be twisted out of the center position and the wheels must be "straight ahead".

Removing

- Lift both retainers - arrows - on the airbag spiral spring/return spring with slip ring (F138) - 1 - slightly and pull the spring back from steering column or steering column switch.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

When installing the airbag spiral spring/return spring with slip ring (F138), it must be in the center position and the wheels must be straight ahead.

The airbag spiral spring/return spring with slip ring (F138) center position, which depends on the manufacturer, is depicted as follows:

The color marked (black square) band - arrow - must be located in viewing window - 1 -.

The color marked (yellow) band - arrow - must be located in viewing window - 1 -.

If a new Steering Angle Sensor (G85) is installed, then the work procedure "Basic Setting" must be performed. Refer to --> [ Steering Angle Sensor, Basic Setting ] Steering Angle Sensor, Basic Setting.

Steering Angle Sensor

Removing

- Remove the Steering Angle Sensor (G85) - 1 - toward rear from steering column switches - arrow -.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal.

Turn Signal Switch

"Turn signal switch" consists of the components Turn Signal switch (E2), Headlamp Dimmer/Flasher Switch (E4) and depending on equipment Cruise Control Switch (E45).

For reasons of clarity, steering column switches with Cruise Control Switch (E45) are depicted as removed in the illustration.

Removing

- Release retaining clips - arrows - using a 1.0 mm feeler gauge - 1 - and remove "turn signal switch" toward rear.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

"Turn signal switch" must engage audibly.

Windshield Wiper Switch

Removing

For reasons of clarity, steering column switches are depicted as removed in the illustration.

- Release retaining clips - arrows - using a 1.0 mm feeler gauge - 1 - and remove Windshield Wiper Switch (E) toward rear.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

Windshield Wiper Switch (E) must engage audibly.

Steering Column Switch Base Plate

For the removal of base carrier for steering column switches - 2 -, shear bolts of steering lock housing must be drilled out. New shear bolts - 1 - are required for the subsequent installation.

CAUTION!
Before drilling out shear bolts, always make sure that components secured to base carrier are removed beforehand.

By drilling out, drill shavings can reach the neighboring components, which can lead to damage and / or malfunctions!

Follow the specified sequence when removing the components.

When disconnecting and connecting the battery, the procedure must be followed as described in the Repair information. Refer to --> [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] .

Removing

- Disconnect the battery. Refer to --> [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] .

Remove the following components in order:

- Remove the steering wheel.

- Remove the steering column trim.

- Remove Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module (J527). Refer to --> [ Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module ].

- Remove Airbag Spiral Spring/Return Spring With Slip Ring (F138). Refer to --> [ Airbag Spiral Spring/Return Spring With Slip Ring ].

- Remove Steering Angle Sensor (G85). Refer to --> [ Steering Angle Sensor ].

- Remove Turn Signal switch (E2). Refer to --> [ Turn Signal Switch ].

- Remove Windshield Wiper Switch (E). Refer to --> [ Windshield Wiper Switch ].

- Disconnect harness connector - arrow - at induction coil - 3 -.

After components secured to base carrier have been removed, the base carrier can be removed:

- Drill out mounting bolts - 1 - for steering lock housing - 3 -.

Bolts M8 - 1 -, core hole diameter 6.8 mm.
