Transmission, Removing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Disconnect Tool (8875A)








- Open the hood.

- Disconnect the negative and positive battery cables (1).

- Remove the battery hold down bolt (3) and remove the battery (2).

- Remove the clips securing the harness and ground cable to the battery tray.

- Remove the battery tray.






- Remove the vacuum pump, if equipped.

- Remove the overflow bottle (1).






- Disconnect the oil cooler lines (1) from the transaxle using disconnect tool (8875A).






- Remove the heater line bolts (2).

- Disconnect the input speed sensor electrical connector (3).






- Disconnect the output speed sensor electrical connector (2).

- Disconnect the transfer shaft speed sensor electrical connector (1).






- Disconnect the shift cable (1) from the transaxle manual valve lever (2).

- Remove the shift cable from the bracket.






- Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector (2).

- Remove the crankshaft position sensor bolt (1).

- Remove the crankshaft position sensor (3).






- Disconnect the solenoid pack electrical connector (2) at the valve body oil pan (1).






- Support the transaxle with a floor jack.

- Remove the left transaxle mount bolts (1).






- Remove the transaxle upper bellhousing bolts (3).






- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to => for the proper procedures.

- Remove the ground cable bolt (2) from the transaxle.

- Remove the clip (1) from the valve body oil pan.

- Remove the axle shafts.

- Remove the front wheelhouse liners..






- Remove the rear transaxle mount bracket bolt (3).






- Remove the remaining rear transaxle mount bracket bolts (1).






- Support the engine and transmission with a jacks.

- Remove the crossmember through bolt (1).






- Remove the transmission crossmember bolts (1).

- Remove the transmission crossmember (4).






- Lower the engine and transmission in order to gain access to the left transmission mount bracket bolts.

- Remove the left transmission mount bolts (1).

- Remove the left transmission mount (2).






The three bolts on the left side of the front bracket hold the starter in place, ensure the starter is supported.

- Remove the front mount bracket bolts (1).

- Remove the heater line bracket bolt (3).






- Remove the front mount bracket bolt (3).

- Remove the front mount bracket (2).






4.0L Engines

- Remove the exhaust bracket bolts (3).

- Remove the exhaust cross under pipe.

- Remove the stand off bracket bolts (2).

- Remove the stand off bracket (4).






- Remove the torque converter dust shield bolt (3).

- Remove torque converter dust shield (2).






- Remove the torque converter bolts (1). Upon removing the bolts, a tight tolerance (slotted) hole will be encountered. Mark this location on both the flexplate and torque converter with paint as a reference mark for assembly.

The bolts on each side of the inspection opening were removed with the exhaust bracket.

- Remove the six lower transaxle bolts (2).

- Separate and lower the transaxle from the engine compartment.

3.8L Engines






- Remove the structural cover to oil pan bolts (1).

- Remove the structural cover to transmission bolts (2).

- Remove the structural cover (3).






- Remove the torque converter bolts (1). Upon removing the bolts, a tight tolerance (slotted) hole will be encountered. Mark this location on both the flexplate and torque converter with paint as a reference mark for assembly.

- Remove the two lower transaxle bolts.

- Separate and lower the transaxle from engine compartment.
