Draining and Filling
Draining and Filling
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Refractometer (T10007)
• Drip Tray (V.A.G 1306)
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Spring Type Clip Pliers VAS 6362 (VAS 5024A)
• Adapter (V.A.G 1274/8)
• Cooling System Charge Unit (VAS 6096)
Draining
CAUTION!
Hot steam may escape when opening the expansion tank cap. Wear protective goggles and protective clothing to prevent damage to eyes and scalding. Cover the cap with a cloth and open very carefully.
- Open the coolant expansion tank cap.
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Disconnect the connector - 1 - from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor (on Radiator) (G83).
- Remove the coolant hose - 2 - from the radiator to drain the coolant.
- Disconnect the additional coolant hose - arrow - from the coolant pump (V36)/fuel cooler pump (V166).
• Observe disposal regulations for coolant!
Filling
CAUTION!
Only use tap water for mixing. Well water does not have the quality necessary to ensure proper coolant function.
• Only use coolant additive G 12 plus-plus that conforms to TL VW 774 G.
• G12, G12 plus and G12 plus-plus can be mixed.
• G 12 plus-plus prevents frost and corrosion damage, scaling and also raises the boiling point. The cooling system must be filled with coolant additive year-round.
• Because of its high boiling point, the coolant improves engine reliability under heavy loads, particularly in countries with tropical climates.
• Protection against frost must be assured down to approximately -25 °C (-13 °F) in arctic climatic countries down to approximately -35 °C (-31 °F).
• The coolant concentration must not be reduced by adding water even in warmer seasons and in warmer countries. The coolant additive portion must be at least 40%.
• If for climatic reasons greater frost protection is required, the amount of G 12 plus-plus can be increased, but only up to 60% (frost protection to about -40 °C (-40 °F), otherwise frost protection and cooling effectiveness will be reduced.
• If radiator, heat exchanger, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket is replaced, do not reuse old coolant.
• The refractometer (T10007) is recommended for determining freeze protection density.
Recommended Mixture Ratios:
1 The quantity of coolant may vary depending on vehicle equipment.
Procedure
- Install the lower coolant hose to the radiator and secure.
- Install the coolant hose onto the coolant pump (V36).
- Install the (V.A.G 1274/8) onto the expansion tank.
- Fill the coolant circuit using (VAS 6096). Refer to the operating instructions for cooling system charge unit VAS 6096.
