Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair






Catalytic Converters with Front Exhaust Pipe, Removing and Installing

Removing

- Remove the air filter => [ Air Filter, Removing and Installing ] Air Filter, Removing and Installing

Engine codes CBFA, CCTA and CCTB:





- Disconnect Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) (G39) harness connector - arrow - and free up cable.

All:





- From above, remove the nuts - arrows - on the front exhaust pipe connection to the turbocharger.

- Remove nuts accessible from below from front exhaust pipe to the turbocharger connection.

- Remove the nuts - arrows - and slightly pull the vehicle floor cover downward.





Engine codes BZB, CAWA, CAWB, CCTA, CCTB and CGYA:





- Disconnect the electrical connector - arrow - on the right side of the underbody.

- Remove the electrical connector out of the bracket and free up the electrical wire to the oxygen sensor.

Engine code CBFA:





- Unclip the wires - arrows -, remove the bracket - 2 - and disconnect the connectors - 1 and 3 -.

All:





- Remove exhaust system bracket - arrows -.

- Remove the front cross member for the vehicle floor - arrows -.





CAUTION!
Risk of damaging decoupling elements.

Do not bend decoupling element in front exhaust pipe more than 10°.

- Loosen clamping sleeve - 1 - and push it rearward.

- Remove the catalytic converters with the front exhaust pipe.

Installing

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal, noting the following:

Coat turbocharger stud bolts with hot bolt paste (G 052 112 A3).

Replace gaskets and self-locking nuts.

Install exhaust system free of stress => [ Exhaust System, Installing ] Exhaust System, Passat.
