Transmission, Removing
Transmission, Removing
Short Description
The transmission is removed downward as a unit.
From above;
The battery, air filter housing and starter are removed. Coolant hoses are clamped off. Before removing the subframe, the engine and transmission must be supported.
From below,:
The pendulum support removed. The subframe remains in the vehicle.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine Support Bridge (10-222A)
• Multipoint Socket (T10035)
• Adapter (10-222A/13)
• Transmission Support (3282)
• Adjustment Plate (3282/42A)
• Insert Tool 18 mm (T10179)
• Pin (3282/29)
• Hose Clamps up to 40 mm (3093) and/or hose clamps up to 25 mm dia. (3094)
• Engine and Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383A)
• Engine Support Device (3300A)
Removing
- Lift the vehicle, all 4 lift points of the hoist are at the same height.
- Place the selector lever in the P position.
- Remove the entire air filter housing.
- Remove the intake hose from turbocharger so that rear eye for suspending engine is accessible.
- Remove the battery the battery tray bolts - arrows - and tray.
- Remove the upper starter bolt.
- Remove the selector lever cable lock washer - arrows - and cable from the transmission.
Use pliers to remove the washer on the cable mounting bracket. Do not use a sharp end lever otherwise the rubber grommet on the cable may get damaged.
Both lock washers must later be replaced when adjusting cable.
Remove the cable from transmission cable mounting bracket with great care. Do not bend.
You can also slide cable back slightly from cable mounting bracket and later remove when lowering transmission. But then observe cable when lowering transmission.
During later installation, only engage small lock washer after checking and adjusting cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Checking through 02.2009 ].
- Clamp off the coolant hoses with either (3093) or (3094) and remove them.
- Release Mechatronic connector retainer by rotating and remove connector.
- Remove the cable bracket from the black front transmission cover (2 M6 nuts).
- Remove all engine/transmission bolts.
Use the following tools:
• (T10061)
• (T10035)
• (T10179)
It is advisable to complete the work under the vehicle now. This prevents the weight of the engine from resting on the engine support bridge and therefore on the body for a long period of time.
- Remove the noise insulation and lower section of the left front wheel housing liner if necessary.
- Remove the connecting hose between charge air cooler and charge air tube.
- Remove the fan shroud.
- Remove the exhaust system suspended mount bracket bolts - arrows - from the subframe.
- Disconnect the exhaust system at the double clamp - arrows -.
- Tie up the front exhaust pipe or lay is on the tunnel bridge.
- Remove the left coupling rod from the control arm and move it to the side.
- Remove the left ball joint nuts - arrows - from the lower control arm.
- Remove both drive axles from the transmission and carefully lay aside.
- Move the left drive axle into the wheel housing and on the longitudinal member. By doing so, the shaft will not interrupt further work.
Do not damage the surface of the drive axles. For this reason, tie wraps made out of plastic or both (T10038) are very good.
- Remove heat shield bolts - arrows - and shield over the right drive axle, if equipped.
Both drive axles are attached to the struts using (T10038).
- Remove the left front level control system sensor (G78) from the control arm.
- Remove the pendulum support bolts - 1, 2 and 3 -.
- Remove the right heat shield bolt - 1 - from the subframe.
- Tighten the (T10346) with an appropriate bolt - 2 -.
Bolt - 2 - = M6 X 20
- Secure the (3300 A) to the (T10346).
- Place a cloth between (3300 A) and the engine.
If possible, place the support device against the engine crankcase. Do not push it yet!
- If the hose and cable connections are located near the engine lifting eyes: disconnect these now.
Use 2 spindles.
- Support engine and transmission with (10 - 222 A), (10 - 222 A /18), (10 - 222 A /10) and (10 - 222 A /8). Do not lift up.
- Support engine and transmission with (10 - 222 A) and (10 - 222 A /8). Do not lift up.
- Remove all bolts - 1 and 2 - for the transmission mount bracket - A -.
- Lower the engine/transmission slightly over (10 - 222 A) spindles so bracket can be removed.
A maximum of 6 rotations is sufficient to remove the bracket - arrow -.
- Remove the lower starter bolt and remove starter.
It is easier to remove the starter from above. Lower the vehicle. Perform the next step from above.
- Remove the bolt in starter hole.
- A small, additional cover plate (above right drive axle flange) is located on the engine/transmission intermediate plate. Remove this cover plate - A -.
- Lower the engine with transmission until enough clearance is available for removal between upper edge of transmission and left longitudinal member.
- Align (3282) with (3282/42 A).
- Guide (V.A.G 1383 A) under transmission and support transmission. Do not lift up.
The transmission is disconnected from the engine in this position.
- Remove all remaining engine to transmission bolts.
- Carefully press engine/transmission forward.
• When moving the engine/transmission assembly, pay attention to the connection lines, hoses and radiator.
- Remove the transmission from engine while being careful of selector lever cable and lower transmission.
Transport transmission and secure to assembly stand. Refer to => [ Transmission, Transporting and Securing to Assembly Stand ] Transmission, Transporting and Securing to Assembly Stand.
