Disassembly

- Using puller set (C-293-PA) (1), adapters (9613) (2) and plug (9678) , remove the pinion side bearing cone (3).

- Install puller set (C-293-PA) (1), adapters (9613) (2) and plug (9678) in order to remove the ring gear side bearing cone.

- Remove the ring gear-to-differential case bolts (4) and floating pinion shaft retainers (2).

- Separate the ring gear (2) from the differential case (1).

- Separate the differential cover (1) from the case (2) using a suitable screwdriver (3) at the relief position (4).

- Lift the differential support (1) from the case (2).

- Remove the side gear thrust washer (1).

- Remove the differential side gear (1).

- Remove the pinion shaft (1).

- Remove the pinion gears (1) and the tabbed washers (2).

- Remove the differential side gear (1).

- Remove the side gear thrust washer (1).

- Inspect all components for excessive wear.

- Using remover (8356) (1) and a 12 mm hex head bolt as a press plug remove the small pinion bearing.

- Using puller set (C-293-PA) (1), Adapters (C-293-47) (2) and Press Plug (C-4487-1) in order to remove the large pinion bearing.

Assembly

The differential is serviced as an assembly. Differential service is limited to bearing cups and cones. Any other differential component failure must be remedied by differential assembly and transfer shaft replacement.

- Install the side gear thrust washer (1) to differential case.

- Install the differential side gear (1) to the case.

- Install the pinion gears (1) and washers (2) to the case, while orientating the washer tabs (3) to the notch (4) in case.

- Install the pinion shaft (1).

- Install the side gear (1) to the case.

- Install the side gear thrust washer (1) to the case.

- Install the differential support (1) into position, while aligning the through holes.

- Install the differential ring gear (2) to the differential case (1).

New bolts must be used.

- Install the ring gear-to-case bolts (4), with pinion shaft retainers (2), and tighten the bolts (4) to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs).

- Check the differential side gear turning torque using differential bearing torque tool (C-4995A). The turning torque should be no more than 10 to 20 in lbs of drag. If the drag exceeds 20 in lbs decrease the shim size, if the drag is less than 10 in lbs of drag increase the shim size.

- Using installer (6888) (1) and a arbor press (2), install the differential bearing (3) to the pinion side of the differential housing.

- Using bearing installer (C-4213) (2) and a arbor press (1), install the differential bearing (3) onto the ring gear side of the differential.

- Using installer (MD998911) (1) and a arbor press, install the large pinion bearing to the pinion shaft.

- Using installer (9723) (1) and a arbor press, install the small pinion bearing (2) to the pinion shaft.
