Fuel System, Bleeding
After installing the high pressure pump, it must be filled with fuel before starting the engine. Do not run it when it is dry.
• When installing the high pressure pump, make sure that no dirt enters the fuel system.
• Only remove the plugs right before installing the fuel lines.
• The fuel tank must be filled.
To fill the high pressure fuel pump with fuel, proceed as follows:
- Connect a battery charger.
- Disconnect the connector to the fuel pressure regulator valve (N276) to prevent the engine from running when cranking the starter.
- Crank the starter three times for 13 seconds each. Allow 20 seconds between each cranking attempt. Otherwise the starter could overheat.
- Connect the connector to the fuel pressure regulator valve.
- Erase the diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory with a scan tool. Refer to => [ Engine Control Module DTC Memory, Checking and Erasing ] Scan Tool Testing and Procedures.
- Start the engine.
- After bleeding the fuel system, let the engine run at a moderate speed for a few minutes and then shut it off.
- Check the fuel system for leaks. Refer to => [ Fuel System, Performing Leak Test ] Fuel System, Performing Leak Test.
- Follow the applicable safety precautions when performing a road test. Refer to => [ Safety Precautions ] Diesel Fuel Injection.
- Test drive the vehicle a minimum of 20 km/h and use full throttle at least one time. Then check the high pressure area one more time for leaks.
• If there is still air in the fuel system, the engine may switch to emergency mode during the road test. Stop the engine and erase the DTC memory. Refer to => [ Engine Control Module DTC Memory, Checking and Erasing ] Scan Tool Testing and Procedures. Then continue the road test.
