Engine Control Module: Service and Repair






Motronic Engine Control Module (J220)

If it is necessary to replace the Engine Control Module (ECM), connect the vehicle diagnostic tester and perform "Replace control module".

Note the following whenever working inside the engine compartment due to limited space:

Route all hoses and lines in their original locations.

Ensure sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components.

Removing

- Turn off the ignition.

- Remove the E-box cover inside the engine compartment - arrows -.






With Anti-Theft Protection:






- Disconnect the threaded connection - 2 -.

- Remove the locking mechanism - 5 -.

- Disconnect the connectors - 1 and 3 - from the ECM.

Only if the ECM has to be replaced:

- Remove the threaded connections - 6 - and the bracket - 4 -.

Without Anti-Theft Protection:

- Disconnect the connectors - 1 and 3 - from the ECM.

Continuation for all Vehicles:






- Push the tabs on the side guides - 3 - carefully toward the outside with a screwdriver - 2 -.

- Remove the ECM - 1 - from the guides - 3 -.

Installing

- Install the ECM - 1 - into the guides - 3 - until it locks.






With Anti-Theft Protection:






- Attach the bracket - 4 - to the ECM with the shear bolts - 6 -.

- Tighten the shear bolts - 6 - just enough until the bolt head breaks off.

- Connect the connectors - 1 and 3 - to the ECM.

- Install the locking mechanism - 5 - with shear bolts - 2 -.

- Tighten the shear bolts - 2 - just enough until the bolt head breaks off.

Without Anti-Theft Protection:

- Connect the connectors - 1 and 3 - to the ECM.

Continuation for all Vehicles:






- Install the E-box cover - arrows -.
