Thermostat: Service and Repair
Coolant Thermostat, Removing and Installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Drip tray (V.A.G 1306) or drip tray for workshop crane (VAS 6208)
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Hose clip pliers VAS 6362
Perform the following:
Removing
Risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.
• The coolant system is under pressure when the engine is warm.
• Wear protective goggles and protective clothing to prevent damage to eyes and scalding.
• Reduce pressure by covering coolant reservoir cap with a cloth and carefully opening.
- Drain the coolant. Refer to => [ Cooling System, Draining and Filling ] Cooling System, Draining and Filling.
- Place drip tray under engine.
- Disconnect coolant hose from connecting piece - 3 -.
- Remove bolts - 4 - from connecting piece - 3 - and remove connecting piece - 3 - with coolant thermostat - 1 -.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. When doing this note the following:
- Moisten new O-ring - 2 - with coolant.
- Insert the connection - 3 - with the coolant thermostat - 1 - in the cylinder block.
• The clip of the thermostat must be positioned at approximately right angle.
- Tighten mounting bolts - 4 -.
Tightening specification: 15 Nm
- Fill the coolant. Refer to => [ Cooling System, Draining and Filling ] Cooling System, Draining and Filling.
