Valve Guide Seal: Service and Repair
Valve Stem Seals, Removing and Installing
(with cylinder head installed)
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Valve assembly tool (2036)
• Puller (3047 A)
• Spark plug removal tool (3122 B)
• Valve stem seal driver (3129)
• Puller (T10112)
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Lever (VW 541/1A)
• Pressure piece (VW 541/5)
• Pressure hose (VW 653/3)
Perform the following:
Removing
- Remove camshaft => [ Camshaft, Removing and Installing ] Service and Repair.
- Remove the hydraulic valve lifter and lay it down with the contact surface facing down. Be careful not to switch valve lifters.
- Remove the spark plug wires using the extractor (T10112).
- Remove the spark plug with the spark plug wrench (3122 B).
- Move piston for respective cylinder to "Bottom Dead Center (DC) position".
- Install the assembly tool (2036) and and adjust the mounting to the stud height.
- Install the pressure hose (VW 653/3) in the spark plug threads.
- Connect the pressure hose to minimum 6 bar.
- Remove valve springs with valve lever (VW 541/1A) and pressure piece (VW 541/5).
• Tight keepers can be loosened by tapping lightly on the lever.
- Pull off valve stem seals with valve seal removal tool (3047 A).
Installing
- Attach the plastic sleeves provided - A - to the respective valve stem. This will help avoid damage to new valve stem seal - B -.
- Insert new valve stem seal into valve stem seal driver (3129).
- Grease lip of valve stem seal and carefully slide onto valve guide.
