Water Pump: Service and Repair

Coolant Pump, Removing and Installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Drip tray (V.A.G 1306) or drip tray for workshop crane (VAS 6208)






• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)






• Hose clip pliers VAS 6362

Perform the following:

Removing

• Always replace gaskets and seals.

• The lower toothed belt guard can remain installed.

• The toothed belt remains in position on the crankshaft sprocket.

• Cover the toothed belt with a cloth to protect it from coolant before removing the coolant pump.

- Drain the coolant. Refer to => [ Cooling System, Draining and Filling ] Cooling System, Draining and Filling.

- Remove ribbed belt => [ Ribbed Belt, Removing and Installing ] Service and Repair.

- Remove the ribbed belt tensioning damper.

- Remove the upper and center toothed belt guards.

- Remove toothed belt from coolant pump toothed belt gear => [ Toothed Belt, Removing and Installing ] Service and Repair.

- Remove the mounting bolt - 1 - from the rear toothed belt guard - 2 -.






- Remove the coolant pump bolts - 5 - and then remove the coolant pump - 4 -.

Installing

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. When doing this note the following:

- Moisten new O-ring - 3 - with coolant.






- Insert coolant pump - 4 -.

Installation position: Sealing plug in housing points downward.

- Tighten mounting bolts - 5 -.

Tightening specification: 15 Nm

- Tighten the mounting bolt - 1 - for the toothed belt guard - 1 - on the cylinder head.

Tightening specification: 20 Nm

- Toothed belt, installing => [ Toothed Belt, Removing and Installing ] Service and Repair.

- Install the ribbed belt tensioning element.

Tightening specification: 25 Nm

- Install the ribbed belt. Refer to => [ Ribbed Belt, Removing and Installing ] Service and Repair.

- Fill the coolant. Refer to => [ Cooling System, Draining and Filling ] Cooling System, Draining and Filling.
