Fuel Tank, Draining with Fuel Pump Still Installed

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Fuel extracting adapter (VAS 5190 /3)

Test instrument adapter/DSO (5-pin) (VAS 5565)

Remote control connection (V.A.G 1348/3A)

Perform the following:

Fuel system is under pressure!

Wear protective goggles and protective clothing in order to avoid injury and contact with the skin.

Before loosening line connections, place cloths around the connection point. Then release pressure by carefully pulling off the line.

Connect the fuel siphoning device (VAS 5190) ground cable to the vehicle ground.

- Disconnect fuel supply line - 1 -. Push the locking ring upward and into the housing.

- Connect the fuel siphoning device (VAS 5190) and adapter (VAS 5190 /3) to the fuel supply line.

- Remove the bench seat. Refer to; Seat Bench, Removing and Installing.

- Disconnect the connector - arrow -.

- Connect the test instrument adapter/DSO (5-pin) (VAS 5565) to the connector and to the fuel delivery unit.

- Connect the VAG 1348 remote control (V.A.G 1348/3A) to the test instrument adapter/DSO (5-pin) (VAS 5565) and to the positive (+) battery terminal.

This work step allows the fuel pump to run when the engine is not running.

- Remove the cover from the fuel filler tube.

- Operate the remote control (V.A.G 1348/3A) and the shut-off valve on the fuel extractor (VAS 5190) until the fuel tank is empty.

Do not run the fuel pump when it is dry.

Fuel Tank, Draining with Faulty Fuel Pump

Perform the following:

The vehicles have a 90° locking device and require a corresponding adapter.

If the adapter is not available, the threaded part of the fuel siphoning unit must be held in place.

The fuel tank has a check valve installed. Be careful not to damage this check valve while extracting fuel.

Attach the fuel siphoning device (VAS 5190) ground cable to an ungrounded area on the body.

- Remove the cone piece - 2 - from the shaft piece - 1 - on the fuel extracting unit (VAS 5190).

- Attach insulating tape - arrow - to the hose at a distance - a - = 1,500 mm from the end of the suction hose.

- Remove the cover from the fuel filler tube.

- Install the adapter - 1 - for the fuel extracting unit on the fuel filler tube (VAS 5190).

- Slide the suction hose into the fuel tank far enough so the mark applied earlier - arrow - is aligned with the shaft piece.

- Extract the fuel. Refer to the => operating Instructions for the fuel siphoning device (VAS 5190).

Fuel tank is drained almost completely.

Do not use force to pull the extractor hose it if gets stuck on the check valve.

In this case, remove the fuel delivery unit and manually hold the check valve open. When doing this, make sure the arm does not come in contact with the fuel.
