Clutch Slave Cylinder: Service and Repair






Clutch Slave Cylinder

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Removing

- Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable.

- Remove the engine cover with air filter.

- Remove the battery and the battery tray.

- Pull the locking mechanism all the way forward from the selector cable in the - direction of arrow 1 - and then unlock it to the left in the - direction of arrow 2 -.






- Push the relay lever forward (in the - direction of arrow 3 -).

- Remove the clip - arrow 1 - and then remove the relay lever and the cable retainer.






- Remove the shift cable lock washer - arrow 2 - from the shift lever - A -.

- Remove the shift cable from the pin.

- Remove the nut - arrow 3 - and then remove the shift lever - A -.

- Remove the cable bracket bolts - arrows - and bracket - 1 - from the transmission.






- Secure the cable with the bracket off to the side.

- Free up the wire - 2 - on the mount - 1 -.






- Remove the transmission support bolts - A arrows - and support.






- Remove the clutch slave cylinder bolts - B arrows - from the transmission.

- Place a lint free cloth under the clutch master cylinder.

The hose/line assembly can be clamped off using the hose clamps up to 25 mm dia. (3094).






- Remove the clip - 1 - for the hose/line assembly all the way from the clutch slave cylinder.

- Remove the hose/line assembly - 2 - from the clutch slave cylinder and seal it.

Do not press the clutch pedal anymore.

Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:

- Grease the clutch slave cylinder plunger head with grease for clutch plate splines (G 000 100).

- Install the clutch slave cylinder and tighten the bolts - B arrows - to specification.






- Attach the hose/line assembly to the clutch slave cylinder.

- Push the hose/line assembly clip all the way in.

- Pull on the hose/line assembly to make sure it is secure.

- Install the transmission support and bolts - A arrows -.

- Bleed the hydraulic system after installing the clutch slave cylinder. Refer to => [ Hydraulic System, Bleeding ] Procedures.

Assemble the shift lever. Refer to => [ Shift and Selector Cables Overview ] Shift and Selector Cables Overview.

Adjust the shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

- Install the battery tray and the battery.

- Install the engine cover with air filter.

- Connect the battery and follow the procedure regarding what to do after connecting the battery.

Tightening Specifications

Cable bracket to transmission, see - item 15 - in the => [ Shift and Selector Cables Overview ] Shift and Selector Cables Overview.

Transmission support to transmission mount bracket bolts - arrows -:






- Replace the bolts.

- Tighten all bolts hand tight.

- Tighten the bolts to the 20 Nm + an additional 90° (1/4) turn.
