Camshaft Timing Chain






Camshaft Timing Chain

Conditions:

The transmission is removed

The flywheel is removed

The oil pan is removed

The sealing flange, transmission side is removed

The cylinder head cover removed

Removing

- Rotate the engine using the vibration damper to the adjusting marks.






The ground down tooth, must be aligned with the main bearing cap joint - arrow A -.

The mark - arrow - must be aligned with the mark on the oil pump.

This position is reached at every fourth turn.

The camshaft lobes - A - for cylinder 1 must face each other.






- Removing camshaft adjusters. Refer to => [ Camshaft Adjuster ] Camshaft Adjuster.

- Remove the bolt - 1 - and pin - 2 -. Remove the guide rail - A -.






- Remove the timing chain upward.

Installing

Conditions:

The crankshaft is at Top Dead Center (TDC).

The high pressure pump sprocket is secured with the adjustment tool (T10363)

The camshafts are secured with the camshaft bar (T10068 A)

- Guide the timing chain, from above, through the opening in the cylinder head.

- Install the guide rail - A - and initially only install and tighten the pin - 2 -.






Several links in the timing chain are copper colored. These chain links provide installation help. The 3 adjacent copper colored chain links are placed on the oil pump chain sprocket.

- First, install the timing chain on the oil pump chain sprocket. The mark must align with the center copper colored chain link - A -.






- Install the timing chain on the high pressure pump sprocket. The mark must align with the copper colored chain link.

- Install and tighten the guide rail bolt - 1 -.






- Insert the intake camshaft adjuster "24E" in the timing chain so that the copper colored chain link is aligned with the mark on the camshaft adjuster. Install the camshaft adjuster bolt hand tight.






- Insert the exhaust camshaft adjuster "32A" in the timing chain so that the copper colored chain link is aligned with the mark on the camshaft adjuster. Install the camshaft adjuster bolt hand tight.

- Check the position of the copper colored chain links with respect to the adjustment marks.






After rotating the crankshaft, the copper colored chain links are no longer aligned with the adjustment marks.

- Install the timing chain tensioner - arrow -. Tightening specification: 50 Nm.






- Remove the camshaft bar (T10068 A) and tighten the camshaft adjuster bolts. Tightening specification: 60 Nm + an additional 90° (1/4) turn.

Counter hold the camshaft using a 27 mm open end wrench on the camshaft recesses - arrow -. The camshaft bar (T10068 A) must not be installed when tightening the camshaft adjuster bolts.






Further installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
