Steering Column Electronics Control Module (J527), Kostal

Follow the specified sequence when removing and installing steering column switch components. Refer to => [ Steering Column Switch Components, Removal and Installation Sequence ] Steering Column Switch Components, Removal and Installation Sequence.

Risk of airbag deployment!

The airbag unit could deploy if mishandled.

Read all the Safety Precautions before working on the airbag.

Removing

- Disconnect the battery. Refer to battery in engine compartment => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Service and Repair or battery in luggage compartment => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Service and Repair.

Remove the following components in the correct order:

- Remove the steering wheel.

- Remove the steering column trim.

- Disconnect the connectors (depending on the vehicle equipment level) - 1 -, - 2 -, - 3 -, - 4 - and - 5 -.






- Remove the screw - arrow B -.

Do not twist the airbag spiral spring/return spring with slip ring (F138) on the steering column electronics control module out of its center position when removing it. The front wheels must be in the "straight-ahead position".

- Open the tabs - arrows A - and remove the steering column electronics control module from the steering column switch.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

The return lever on the turn signal switch (E2) could break off when installing the steering column electronics control module.

The turn signal switch must be off when installing the steering column electronics control module.

- Slide the steering column electronics control module onto the steering column switch until it latches secure.

- Install the screw for the steering column electronics control module on the steering column switch and then tighten it to 1.5 Nm.
