Gear Selector Unit Repair/Replacement
Gear Selector Unit (1991/92), repair / replacementReplacement of gear selector knob
Pull knob and lever sleeve straight upward.
Also remove plastic sleeve underneath if gear selector unit is to be replaced.
Install new gear selector knob
Install knob complete with lock button and sleeve. Ensure that knob is aligned correctly when installing.
Removal of gear selector unit
Disconnect battery ground lead.
Disconnect control rod from gear lever arm.
Disconnect reaction strut from gear selector unit.
Remove soundproofing panel
Remove soundproofing panel at left-hand side under instrument panel.
Pull out soundproofing on right side of propeller shaft tunnel to expose center console screws.
Remove:
- ashtray
- cover plug under parking brake lever
- cover plug in storage compartment
Remove:
- console front mounting screws
- screws securing frame around gear lever and parking brake lever
- center console screws Remove clip at front edge of console.
Disconnect connectors from switches on console.
Caution! If car is equipped with SRS, do not undo 4-pin yellow or 2-pin orange connector.
Remove panel
Pull center console panel backward and remove. Work out gear selector lever through opening in panel front.
Remove panel.
Disconnect indicator panel lamp
On car with start inhibitor switch:
- open connector to switch solenoid.
Withdraw wiring between console and carpet.
Remove gear selector unit
Transfer of components
Light strip
Cut away spring clips. Transfer strip and spacers to new gear selector unit. (Spacers are installed only on LHD cars.)
Use new clips when reinstalling component.
Installation
Install new gear selector unit. Tighten mounting screws to 8 Nm (6 ft lb).
Install center console panel
Install clip at front edge of panel.
Ensure that center console is seated correctly.
Install center console
Secure console to front mounting, storage compartment and parking brake lever frame.
Install:
- ashtray
- cover plugs (in glove box and under parking brake lever)
Reconnect center console switch connector(s).
Install gear selector knob and sleeve as per
Install soundproofing panel on left-hand side and press back soundproofing on right side.
Reconnect reaction strut and control rod
Reaction strut and control rod are secured with washers and snap rings
Test gear selector movement
In 960, clearance shall be the same between D and N as between 3 and L.
Adjust as required.
Check operation of gear selector
Check that selector cannot be moved from position P when ignition is switched on.
Depress brake pedal and check that selector can be moved to drive position.
