DTC 2-4-3

4-1-1 (2-4-3) THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL




Trouble Code Conditions
The Throttle Position (TP) sensor registers throttle opening from Closed Throttle Position (CTP) to Wide Open Throttle (WOT). If signal from TP sensor constantly exceeds 4.9 volts, or is constantly less than 0.06 volts, the Engine Control Module (ECM) notes it as a fault, and Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 4-1-1 (2-4-3) is set.

Substitute value(s)
- A substitute value which corresponds to open throttle is set.

Fault source(s)
Signal too high:
- Signal lead short circuited to live.
- Power lead (5 volt) short circuited to live.
- Break in signal lead.
- Break in ground lead.
- Contact resistance in connectors.
- Defective TP sensor.

Signal too low:
- Signal lead short circuited to ground.
- Power lead (5 volt) short circuited to ground.
- Break in power lead.
- Contact resistance in connectors.
- Defective TP sensor.

Fault symptom(s)
- High idle speed.

TEST PROCEDURE




OTHER DTC'S
- Read off other DTCs.

If DTC 1-2-3, 3-1-4, 1-4-3, 4-3-3 and/or 4-1-3 are stored:
^ Check TP sensor, Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor, Knock Sensor (KS) and EGR temperature sensor common connector # 30 on ECM for contact resistance and oxidation, as well as break.

If none of the above DTCs is stored:
^ Status report. Proceed to STATUS REPORT section below.




STATUS REPORT
^ Permanent fault, signal too high:
- Proceed to: PERMANENT FAULT, SIGNAL TOO HIGH section below.

^ Permanent fault, signal too low:
- Proceed to: PERMANENT FAULT, SIGNAL TOO LOW section below.

^ Intermittent fault, signal too high:
- Proceed to: INTERMITTENT FAULT, SIGNAL TOO HIGH section below.

^ Intermittent fault, signal too low:
- Proceed to: INTERMITTENT FAULT, SIGNAL TOO LOW section below.

PERMANENT FAULT, SIGNAL TOO HIGH
Check power lead
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect TP sensor.
- Ignition on.



- Connect a voltmeter between TP sensor connector contact 2 and ground.

Voltmeter should read approx. 5 volts.

If value OK:
^ Check ground lead. Proceed to CHECK GROUND LEAD section below.

If value differs:
^ Check lead between TP sensor connector 2 and ECM # 12 for short circuit to live.

CHECK GROUND LEAD
- Ignition off.
- TP sensor disconnected.



- Connect an ohmmeter between TP sensor connector contact 1 and ground.

If value OK:
^ Check signal lead. Proceed to CHECK SIGNAL LEAD section below.

If value differs:
^ Check connector. Proceed to CHECK CONNECTOR section below.




CHECK CONNECTOR
- Ignition off.
- TP sensor disconnected.
- Check ECM connector and 55-pin connector in central relay unit (A3/F) connector 8 for contact resistance and oxidation.
- ECM connected.
- Connect an ohmmeter between TP sensor connector contact 1 and ground.

Ohmmeter should read approx. 0 ohms.

If value OK:
^ Source of DTC is bad contact in connector.

If value differs:
^ Check lead between TP sensor connector 1 and ECM # 30 for break.

CHECK SIGNAL LEAD
- Ignition on.
- TP sensor disconnected.
- Connect a voltmeter between TP sensor connector contact 3 and ground.

Voltmeter should read approx. 5 volts.

If value OK:
^ Check TP sensor signal. Proceed to CHECK TP SENSOR SIGNAL section below.

If voltmeter reads approx. 0 volts:
^ Check connector. Proceed to CHECK CONNECTOR section below.

If voltmeter reads more than approx. 5 volts:
^ Check lead between TP sensor connector 3 and ECM # 53 for short circuit to live.

- After fixing: Check TP sensor. Proceed to CHECK TP SENSOR section below.

CHECK CONNECTOR
- Ignition off.
- TP sensor disconnected.
- Check ECM connector and 55-pin connector in central relay unit (A3/F) connector 11 for contact resistance and oxidation.
- ECM connected.
- Ignition on.
- Connect a voltmeter between TP sensor connector contact 3 and ground.

Voltmeter should read approx. 5 volts.

If value OK:
^ Source of DTC is bad contact in connector.

If value differs:
^ Check lead between TP sensor connector 3 and ECM # 53 for break.




CHECK TP SENSOR SIGNAL
- Ignition off.
- Connect TP sensor.
- Start engine and allow to idle.
- Enter DTC parameter list.
- Read off ignition advance.

Ignition advance should be 9.5° - 11.5°.

If value OK:
^ Source of DTC is bad contact in TP sensor connector.
^ Check connector for contact resistance and oxidation.

If value differs:
^ Test with a new TP sensor.




CHECK TP SENSOR
TP sensor can break down as sequential fault if signal lead is short circuited to live.
Check TP sensor signal as below.

- Connect TP sensor.
- Erase DTC.
- Start engine and allow to idle.

If DTC 4-1-1 is set:
^ Test with a new TP sensor (if TP sensor faulty, a DTC is set within 20 seconds).

NOTE: Check in Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) 1 for automatic transmission if DTC for TP sensor signal is triggered.

PERMANENT FAULT, SIGNAL TOO LOW
Check power lead
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect TP sensor.
- Ignition on.
- Connect a voltmeter between TP sensor connector contact 2 and ground.

Voltmeter should read approx. 5 volts.

If value OK:
^ Check signal lead. Proceed to CHECK SIGNAL LEAD section below.

If value differs:
^ Check power lead resistance. Proceed to CHECK POWER LEAD RESISTANCE section below.

CHECK POWER LEAD RESISTANCE
- Ignition off.
- TP sensor disconnected.
- Connect an ohmmeter between TP sensor connector contact 2 and ground.

Ohmmeter should read infinite resistance.

If value OK:
^ Check connector. Proceed to CHECK CONNECTOR section below.

If value differs:
^ Check lead between TP sensor connector contact 2 and ECM # 12 for short circuit to ground.

CHECK CONNECTOR
- Ignition off.
- TP sensor disconnected.
- Check ECM connector and 55-pin connector in central relay unit (A3/F) connector 12 for contact resistance and oxidation.
- ECM connected.
- Ignition on.
- Connect a voltmeter between TP sensor connector contact 2 and ground.

Voltmeter should read approx. 5 volts.

If value OK:
^ Source of DTC is bad contact in connector.

If value differs:
^ Check lead between TP sensor connector 2 and ECM # 12 for break.

CHECK SIGNAL LEAD
- Ignition on.
- TP sensor disconnected.
- Connect a voltmeter between TP sensor connector contact 3 and ground.

Voltmeter should read approx. 5 volts.

If value OK:
^ Check TP sensor signal. Proceed to CHECK TP SENSOR SIGNAL section below.

If value differs:
^ Check lead between TP sensor connector 3 and ECM # 53 for short circuit to ground.

NOTE: Check in DTM 1 for automatic transmission if DTC for TP sensor signal is triggered.




CHECK TP SENSOR SIGNAL
- Ignition off.
- Connect TP sensor.
- Start engine and allow to idle.
- Enter DTC parameter list.
- Read off ignition advance.

Ignition advance should read 9.5° - 11.5°.

If value OK:
^ Source of DTC is bad contact in TP sensor connector.
^ Check connector for contact resistance and oxidation.

If value differs:
^ Test with a new TP sensor.




INTERMITTENT FAULT, SIGNAL TOO HIGH
Check leads and connectors
- Check lead between TP sensor connector 3 and ECM # 53 for intermittent break, as well as intermittent short circuit to live.
- Check lead between TP sensor connector 1 and ECM # 30 for intermittent break.
- Check lead between TP sensor connector contact 2 and ECM # 12 for intermittent short circuit to live.
- Check TP sensor, ECM connector as well as 55-pin connector in central relay unit (A3/F) connector 8 and 11 for bad contact.
- Check contact resistance and oxidation.

INTERMITTENT FAULT, SIGNAL TOO LOW
Check leads and connectors
- Check lead between TP sensor connector 3 and ECM # 53 for intermittent short circuit to ground.
- Check lead between TP sensor connector 2 and ECM # 12 for intermittent break, as well as intermittent short circuit to ground.
- Check TP sensor, ECM connector and 55-pin connector in central relay unit (A3/F) connector 12 for bad contact, as well as contact resistance and oxidation.
