Selector Mechanism

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

Removing

- Remove shift knob with cover. Refer to => [ Shift Knob with Cover ] Shift Knob With Cover.

Vehicles with large radio slot:

- Remove air conditioning operating unit.

Vehicles with small radio slot:

- Raise cover - 1 - first in direction of - arrow A - and pull this out in direction of - arrow B -.





All Vehicles

- Remove bolts - arrow C - and then remove ashtray - 2 - from center console.

- Disconnect ashtray lighting electrical connector.

- Remove foam wedges from center console.

- Remove noise insulation upward.

- Remove shifter housing noise insulation - arrows -.





- Remove nuts - arrows -.





- Loosen the quick-release screws - 2 - and - 3 - and remove the rear noise insulation - B -.





Vehicles with 6-cylinder gasoline engine

- Disconnect exhaust system at double clamps - arrows -.





Flex joint in front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10°, otherwise it may be damaged.

The exhaust system with the 3.0L V6 gasoline engine is shown in the illustration.

- Disengage rear part of exhaust system at retaining loops and remove.

A second technician is needed to remove the rear section of the exhaust system.

- Disconnect exhaust system at double clamp - arrow -.





- Remove driveshaft heat shield - arrows -, if applicable.





- Remove exhaust system heat shield - 1 - below shift mechanism - arrows -.





- Remove bolts at transmission/driveshaft flange.

- Press driveshaft - 2 - together with rear final drive. CV joints can be moved axially.

- Tie driveshaft up and toward the side to the heat shield - arrow -.





- Remove the Universal Transmission Adapter (V.A.G 1359/2 ) from the Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) and place a block of wood - arrow - on the punch.





- Support the rear tunnel crossmember using Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A).

- First remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 -, then bolts - 3 - and - 4 -.

- Slowly lower the rear tunnel crossmember with the Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) until distance from crossmember to body is "x".





Dimension x = 60 mm

- Remove right, and left if applicable, driveshaft heat shield - arrow -.





- Remove selector rod connecting rod - 2 -.





- Remove push rod - 1 - by unbolting socket head hex bolt.

- Remove the nut - arrow - and remove the selector shaft lever from the transmission selector shaft.





- Remove shift mechanism to the rear.

Installing

Install in reverse sequence; note the following points:

Seals and self-locking nuts must be replaced.

- Install and tighten the selector shaft lever - arrow -. Tightening specification => [ (Item 24) Cap nut, 20 Nm ] Selector Mechanism Assembly Overview.





- Attach the push rod - 1 -. Tightening specification => [ (Item 13) Bolt, 40 Nm ] Selector Mechanism Assembly Overview.





- Tighten the connecting rod - 2 -. Tightening specification => [ (Item 10) Bolt, 20 Nm ] Selector Mechanism Assembly Overview.

- Tighten the selector housing - arrows -. Tightening specification => [ (Item 18) Nut, 10 Nm ] Selector Mechanism Assembly Overview.





- Tighten the driveshaft on the transmission.

- Install the exhaust system and align it free-of-tension.

- Install tunnel cross member.

- Adjust the selector mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

- Install air conditioning operating unit.
