Malfunction Recognition

Malfunction Recognition

When malfunctions occur in monitored sensors or components, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are stored in DTC memory of the respective control module with a description of the malfunction type.

Initiate On Board Diagnostic (OBD) at beginning of troubleshooting and check DTC memory. Various diagnostic testers (Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS5051/5052, etc.) are available for checking the information stored.

The malfunction information displayed leads to a DTC table with notes on the possible causes to targeted repair measures Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS5051 in the "Guided Fault Finding" function.

NOTE:
- A malfunction will be stored as static malfunction when a malfunction condition exists longer than a certain (predetermined) time. The malfunction will change to a sporadic DTC if the malfunction condition no longer exists in a predetermined time. The procedure repeats itself constantly. Sporadically occurring malfunctions are identified via "/SP" appearing on the display.
- A sporadic malfunction is erased automatically if it no longer occurs after a certain time.

On Board Diagnostic (OBD) options can be used currently e.g. by the use of Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS5051/5052 (see Special Tools catalog for other testers).

The On Board Diagnostic (OBD) is not just limited to saving, checking and erasing or output diagnostic test mode, but also offers basic setting, control module identification, adaptation and coding additional options.
