Shift Mechanism Function Unit

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Pry Lever - Rmv Outside Mirror (80 - 200)

Counterhold Tool (T10172) with Adapter (T10172/5)

Removing

- Remove the front muffler or front exhaust pipe.

- Remove the bolts - arrows - and remove the driveshaft heat shield - 1 -.






- Remove the bolts that connect the driveshaft to the transmission by counter holding them with the (T10172) and (T10172/5).






- Press the driveshaft together with rear final drive; the universal joint is able to slide axially.

- Allow the driveshaft to hang down.

- Loosen the fasteners - arrows - and remove the heat shield - 1 -.






- Remove the ball socket - 1 - on the selector lever cable from the selector shaft lever using the (80 - 200).






- Remove the clip - 2 - and remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

- Remove the multimedia system control head (E380).

- Remove the front ashtray.






- Disconnect the connectors - 2 and 4 -.






- Remove the insulation mat over the shift mechanism.

The illustration does not show the insulation mat.

A second technician is required when detaching shift mechanism below vehicle.

- Remove the bolts - 1, 3, 5 and 6 -.

Depending on the version, the clips - arrows - may not be installed so the shift mechanism may fall down after removing the bolts.

- Remove the selector mechanism downward.

Installing

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:

Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Selector Mechanism Overview ] Selector Mechanism Overview.

Lubricate the ball socket on the selector lever cable with polycarbamide grease (G 052 142 A2) before installing.

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

- Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

- Selector mechanism, checking. Refer to => [ Selector Mechanism, Checking ] Selector Mechanism, Checking.

- Install the driveshaft.

- Install the front muffler or front exhaust pipe.

- Install the front ashtray.

- Install the multimedia system control head.
