Cylinder bank 1 (right):
- Follow sequence - 1 to 20 - when loosening cylinder head bolts.
• Arrow points in direction of travel.
Cylinder bank 2 (left):
- Follow sequence - 1 to 21 - when loosening cylinder head bolts.
• Arrow points in direction of travel.
Continuation for both cylinder banks:
- Carefully remove cylinder head.
Installing
• Replace cylinder head bolts.
• Always replace self-locking nuts, bolts which have been tightened to tightening specifications as well as gaskets and O-rings.
• Carefully remove residual sealant from cylinder head and cylinder block. Make sure that no long scrapes or scratches result.
• Carefully remove all grinding and sanding residue.
• There must be no oil or coolant in the blind holes for the cylinder head bolts in the cylinder block.
• Only unpack new cylinder head gasket immediately prior to installation.
• Handle gasket carefully. Damage in silicon layer and recessed area lead to leakage.
• When replacing the cylinder head or cylinder head gasket, coolant must be completely replaced.
Installation is in reverse order of removal, note the following:
- Before installing cylinder heads, position crankshaft and camshafts to TDC ignition timing mark:
• The camshaft bar (T10068) must engage in both shaft grooves.
• Crankshaft holder (3242) must be screwed in.
- Install new cylinder head gasket.
• Pay close attention to centering bushings - arrows - in cylinder block.
• Pay attention to installation position of cylinder head gasket, marking "oben" (top) or part number must face toward cylinder head.
- Install cylinder head.
- Insert new cylinder head bolts and tighten by hand.
• Allocation: The short bolts are installed on the outside.
- Tighten cylinder head bolts in 4 stages in the tightening sequence shown as follows:
- Using torque wrench, tighten to 30 Nm.
- Using torque wrench, tighten to 50 Nm.
- With a rigid wrench, 90° (1/4 turn) additional turn.
- With a rigid wrench, 90° (1/4 turn) additional turn.
• There is no requirement to retighten the cylinder head bolts after repairs.
Tightening sequence cylinder bank 1 (right):

Tightening sequence cylinder bank 2 (left):
• Arrow points in direction of travel.
The rest of the installation is in reverse order of removal, note the following:
- Install camshaft timing chains Camshaft Timing Chain.
- Install cylinder head covers => [ Installing ] Service and Repair.
- Install intake manifold lower-section => [ Intake Manifold Lower-Section ] Intake Manifold Lower-Section.
- Install intake manifold upper-section => [ Intake Manifold Upper Section ] Cylinder Head, Valvetrain.
