Backrest Release Cable

• The left and right release cables cannot be replaced separately.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Special Pop Rivet Pliers (V.A.G 1753A)

• Drill

• Protective Eyewear

Removing

• Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Safety Precautions ] Service Precautions.

• Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

- Turn on the ignition.

- Disconnect the battery ground (GND) cable from the battery.

- Remove the front seat:

• Standard seat and Sport seat (manual). Refer to => [ Manual Standard Front Seat ] Manual Standard Front Seat.

• Standard seat, Sport seat (power) and Comfort seat. Refer to => [ Power Standard Front Seat ] Power Standard Front Seat.

- Attach the front seat to the fixture for seat repair (VAS 6136). Refer to => [ Front Seat, Installing on the ] Front Seat, Installing on the Fixture For Seat Repair (VAS 6136).

- Remove backrest cover panel. Refer to => [ Backrest Cover ] Backrest Cover.

- Remove the backrest frame trim. Refer to => [ Backrest Frame Trim ] Backrest Frame Trim.

- Remove headrests. Refer to:

• => [ Headrests with Locking Mechanism ] Headrests With Locking Mechanism.

• => [ Power Headrests ] Power Headrests.

- Remove the entry assistance trim. Refer to => [ Entry Assistance Trim ] Entry Assistance Trim.

- Remove cover with upholstery. Refer to => [ Backrest Cover and Upholstery ] Backrest Cover and Upholstery.

- Remove side airbag. Refer to => [ Side Airbag Igniters (N199)/(N200) ] Side Airbag Igniters (N199)/(N200).

• The spring mat or lumbar support does not need to be removed when removing and installing the release cables.

- Using pliers, disengage the eyes - 3 - (quantity: 2) from the pins - 4 - (quantity: 2) on both sides.






- Drill out rivets - 2 - on left and right brackets - 1 -.

5 Backrest frame

- Unclip the end of the release cable - 2 -.






- Press the end of the release cable out of the bracket - 1 - in the direction of the- arrow -.

- Unclip the mount - 1 - from the backrest frame - 2 -.






- Guide the end of the release cable through the mount opening in the backrest frame.

- Remove the left and right release cables from the backrest frame.

Installing

• Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Safety Precautions ] Service Precautions.

• Before handling pyrotechnical components (for example, connecting electrical connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

- Adjust the left and right release cable. Refer to => [ Backrest Release Cable, Adjusting ] Backrest Release Cable, Adjusting.

• Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.

Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.

- Connect the battery ground (GND) cable with the ignition turned on.

• If the airbag indicator lamp (K75) indicates a fault after installation, the DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again using the vehicle diagnostic tester.
