Passenger Occupant Detection System
Passenger Occupant Detection System
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Pry lever (80 - 200)
• Follow all safety precautions when working with pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components, Safety Precautions and Testing Procedures ] Description and Operation and on the passenger occupant detection system. Refer to => [ Passenger Occupant Detection System Deactivation Additional Safety Precautions ] Passenger Occupant Detection System Deactivation Additional Safety Precautions.
• Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, disconnecting the electrical connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". This can be done by touching the door striker, for example.
The replacement part (service kit) for the passenger occupant detection system is already precalibrated and must not be separated under any circumstances. The service kit consists of:
• Passive Occupant Detection System Control Module -J706
• Passive Occupant Detection System Pressure Sensor -G452
• Passive Occupant Detection System Mat
• Seat cushion
• Wiring harness between the passenger occupant detection system control module -J706 and passenger occupant detection system pressure sensor -G452.
Removing
- Move the seat height adjustment into the center before lifting the seat out.
- Remove the front passenger seat. Refer to => [ Standard Seat ] Standard Seat.
- Disconnect the battery ground cable with the ignition switched on.
- Attach the front seat to the fixture for seat repair (VAS 6136). Refer to => [ Installing Front Seat on Fixture for Seat Repair VAS 6136 ] Installing Front Seat on Fixture for Seat Repair VAS 6136.
- Remove backrest:
• Standard seat => [ Backrest ] Backrest.
• Multicontour seat => [ Backrest ] Backrest.
Do not disconnect the electrical connectors on the seat occupied recognition pressure sensor (G452) and the seat occupied recognition control module (J706).
- Carefully remove the passenger occupant detection system pressure sensor (G452) - 3 - from the bracket with a narrow screwdriver - arrow -.
- Open the guide - 1 - for the passenger occupant detection system pressure hose - 2 - and then free up the hose.
- Remove the screw - 2 - and pull the passenger occupant detection system control module (J706) - 1 - out of the mount - arrow -.
- Remove the electrical connector - 1 - from the bracket by pressing the release and removing the electrical connector.
- Open the retainer on the guide - 2 - for the wiring harness - arrow -.
- Free up the wiring harness.
- Remove the screw - 3 -.
- Remove the front passenger seat position sensor (G554) - item 2 - while guiding the guide tab - arrow - out of the seat pan lower frame - 1 -.
- Remove the seat pan cover and cushion (seat pan without seat cushion extension)and carefully fold it to the side. Refer to => [ Seat Cover with Seat Cushion for Standard Seat ] Seat Cover with Seat Cushion for Standard Seat.
- Carefully pry out the seat occupied recognition mat clips - 1 - and - 3 - on the front of the seat pan using a pry lever (80 - 200).
- Guide the passenger occupant detection system pressure sensor (G452) with the wiring harness and then the passenger occupant detection system control module (J706) through the opening in the lower seat frame.
Damage risk.
• Do not bend the seat occupied recognition pressure hose and mat.
- Remove the cushion and cover from the lower seat frame together with the mat - 2 - for the passenger occupant detection system, the passenger occupant detection system pressure sensor (G452) and passenger occupant detection system control module (J706).
- Separate the seat cover and the seat cushion: Standard seat, refer to => [ Seat Cover and Seat Cushion for Standard Seat, Separating and Connecting ] Seat Cover and Seat Cushion for Standard Seat, Separating and Connecting, multicontour seat refer to => [ Seat Cover and Seat Cushion for Comfort Reclining and Multicontour Seat, Separating and Assembling ] Seat Cover and Seat Cushion for Comfort Reclining and Multicontour Seat, Separating and Assembling.
The seat cushion must not be separated from the seat occupied recognition mat.
Installing
Do not disconnect the electrical connectors on the seat occupied recognition pressure sensor (G452) and the seat occupied recognition control module (J706).
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
• Follow all safety precautions when working with pyrotechnic components. Refer to and on the passenger occupant detection system. Refer to => [ Passenger Occupant Detection System Deactivation Additional Safety Precautions ] Passenger Occupant Detection System Deactivation Additional Safety Precautions.
• Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, connecting the electrical connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". This can be done by touching the door striker, for example.
• Do not bend the seat occupied recognition pressure hose and mat.
• Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.
Ignition must be on when connecting battery. If pyrotechnic components (for example, airbag, belt tensioner) are not repaired correctly, they may deploy unintentionally after connecting battery. There must not be anyone inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.
When working on vehicles with the ignition turned on or where the engine has been started, there is a risk of unintentional engine start and of being poisoned by gas in closed areas. There is a risk of clothes and body parts being pulled or getting stuck.
Perform the following steps before turning on the ignition:
• Move the selector lever into P.
• Activate the parking brake
• Turn the ignition off.
• Open the hood.
• Connect the charger unit i.e., battery charger (VAS 5095A) to the battery jump start terminal for the 12V vehicle electrical system.
• Switch the ignition on.
- Disconnect the battery ground wire with the ignition switched on.
When installing a new service kit and after each repair on the front passenger seat where the seat and/or the backrest cover is disengaged, a basic setting procedure must be performed on the seat occupied recognition control module. Refer to => [ Passenger Occupant Detection System Deactivation Additional Safety Precautions ] Passenger Occupant Detection System Deactivation Additional Safety Precautions.
- Select "airbag" in "Guided Fault Finding" to complete. Refer to Vehicle diagnostic tester Vehicle diagnostic tester.
• -J706 passenger occupant detection system control module basic setting
Installation note: For example tightening specifications, replace components. Refer to => [ Seat Occupied Recognition Assembly Overview ] Seat Occupied Recognition Assembly Overview.
