Removal and Replacement




Transmission Replacement

Removal Procedure

1. Remove battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement Service and Repair.

2. Remove transmission range selector lever cable and bracket. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement.

3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.

4. Remove the left front wheelhouse liner. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement .

5. Drain transmission fluid.

6. Remove radiator inlet hose. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement (1.4L LUV) Radiator Inlet Hose ReplacementRadiator Inlet Hose Replacement (1.8L LUW and LWE) Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement.

7. Remove charge air cooler outlet air hose.





8. Disconnect electrical connector (1) transmission control module (TCM), then disconnect the connector from the transmission.

9. Remove transmission fluid cooler inlet pipe from the transmission. 10. Discard the inlet pipe seal.

11. Remove transmission fluid cooler outlet pipe from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement (1.8L LWE and LUW) Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe ReplacementTransmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement (1.4L LUV) Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement.

12. Discard the outlet pipe seal.

13. Plug and/or cap the pipes and transmission to prevent contamination.

14. Remove transmission vent hose.

15. Remove wiring harness for the starter motor from transmission. Remove bolt from retainer on valve body cover. Disconnect the wiring harness from retainer on valve body cover and range selector cable bracket.





16. Remove the 3 upper transmission bolts (2).

17. Raise the vehicle.

18. Install the engine support fixture. For the 1.4L engine, refer to Engine Support Fixture Engine Support Fixture.

For the 1.8L engine, refer to Engine Support Fixture Engine Support Fixture.

19. Remove the drivetrain and front suspension frame. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement .

20. Disconnect the left front wheel drive shaft from transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side.

21. Disconnect the right front wheel drive shaft from transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Right Side Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Right Side.

22. Remove the transmission rear mount bracket from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear.

23. Remove the transmission front mount from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement Transmission Front Mount Replacement.





24. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement (1.4L LUV) Service and RepairStarter Replacement (1.8L LUW and LWE) Service and Repair.

25. Remove access cover from transmission.

26. Mark the relationship of the flex plate to the torque converter for reassembly.

27. Remove and DISCARD the flex plate to torque converter bolts (1).

28. Lower the vehicle.

29. Remove and DISCARD the 3 left transmission mount bolts from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side.

30. Lower the engine and the transmission on the left hand side with the engine support fixture to allow clearance for removal.

31. Raise the vehicle.

32. Position a suitable transmission jack under the transmission.

33. Secure the transmission to the transmission jack using suitable straps or chains.





34. Remove the transmission bolts (1, 3, 4) and nut (5).

Note:
Insure the torque converter remains securely in place on the transmission input shaft while separating and removing the transmission.

35. Separate the transmission from the engine.

36. Lower the transmission from the vehicle.

37. Flush and flow test the transmission oil cooler and lines. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test.

Installation Procedure

1. If the removed transmission will be reinstalled, clean 3 threads of torque converter.

2. Raise the transmission with the transmission jack and position the transmission to the engine.





Caution:
Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

3. Install the transmission bolts (1, 3) and tighten to 70 Nm (52 lb ft).

4. Install the transmission bolts (4) and tighten to 45 Nm (33 lb ft).

5. Install the transmission nut (5) and tighten to 45 Nm (33 lb ft).

6. Remove the transmission jack.

7. Lower the vehicle.

8. Raise the engine and the transmission on the left hand side with the engine support fixture.

9. Install the 3 NEW left transmission mount bolts but do not tighten at this time.

10. Raise the vehicle.





Caution:
Refer to Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution.

11. Install the NEW flex plate to torque converter bolts (1) and tighten to 60 Nm (45 lb ft).

12. Install access cover on the transmission.

13. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement (1.4L LUV) Service and RepairStarter Replacement (1.8L LUW and LWE) Service and Repair.

14. Install the transmission rear mount bracket to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear.

15. Install the transmission front mount to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement Transmission Front Mount Replacement.

16. Install the right front wheel drive shaft to the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Right Side Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Right Side.

17. Install the left front wheel drive shaft to the transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side.

18. Install the drivetrain and front suspension frame. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement .





19. Install the upper transmission bolts (2) and tighten to 70 Nm (52 lb ft).

20. Remove the engine support fixture.

21. Tighten the 3 NEW left transmission mount bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft) plus 60-75 degrees.

22. Raise the vehicle.

23. Install the left front wheelhouse liner. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement .

24. Lower the vehicle.

25. Install the transmission fluid cooler outlet pipe to the transmission. Use a NEW seal. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement (1.8L LWE and LUW) Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe ReplacementTransmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement (1.4L LUV) Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement.

26. Install the transmission fluid cooler inlet pipe to the transmission. Use a NEW seal. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe Replacement (1.4L LUV) Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe ReplacementTransmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe Replacement (1.8L LWE and LUW) Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe Replacement.





27. Connect the electrical connector (1) transmission control module (TCM), then connect the wiring harness to transmission.

28. Install charge air cooler outlet air hose.

29. Install radiator inlet hose. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement (1.4L LUV) Radiator Inlet Hose ReplacementRadiator Inlet Hose Replacement (1.8L LUW and LWE) Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement.

30. Install the transmission range selector lever cable and bracket. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement.

31. Adjust the automatic transmission range selector lever cable. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment.

32. Install the wiring harness starter motor to transmission. Install bolt to retainer on valve body cover. Connect the wiring harness to retainer on valve body cover and range selector cable bracket.

33. Install the transmission vent hose.

34. Fill the transmission with correct fluid.

35. Check transmission fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Check Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Check.

36. Install the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement Service and Repair.
