Checking Clutch Volume Index

After checking for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC), the scan tool should be used to check the Clutch Volume Index (CVI). The CVI is a measurement of the amount of transmission fluid that is needed to fill each clutch pack.

- A high CVI reading may indicate a clutch pack that is worn or wearing out
- A low CVI reading may indicate a clutch pack that is binding
- A CVI reading of zero may indicate a complete clutch failure, rendering an accurate CVI reading impossible

Compare the scan tool CVI reading with the normal range listed below for each clutch pack.

Clutch Normal range
LR 35 - 85
2-4 20 - 77
OD 75 - 150
UD 24 - 70
