Removal






REMOVAL










1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove transmission fill tube bolt from the valve cover.
3. Remove catalytic converter nuts at the turbocharger Catalytic Converter - Removal.
4. Raise and support the vehicle
5. Remove any necessary skid plates (1).
6. Remove catalytic converter to block mounting bolts and position aside Catalytic Converter - Removal.
7. Mark propeller shaft and axle companion flanges for assembly alignment.
8. Remove the rear propeller shaft Drive Shaft - Removal.
9. Remove the front propeller shaft, if necessary Drive Shaft - Removal.
10. Support the transmission.










11. Disconnect the gearshift cable (1) from the transmission manual valve lever (3).
12. Loosen the bolts holding the shift cable retaining strap (2) to the transmission.
13. Remove the shift cable (1) from the transmission.










14. Remove the heat shield from the 13-pin connector.
15. Disconnect 13-pin plug connector (1). Turn bayonet lock of the adapter plug (2) counterclockwise.
16. Remove the 13-pin connector (1) from the transmission.
17. Remove the starter motor from the transmission starter pocket and position aside Starter - Removal.










18. Remove the flex plate bolt access cover.
19. With socket wrench on dampener bolt rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until converter bolts are accessible. Then remove bolts one at a time through the access hole (1).










20. Remove transmission fill tube heat shield bolts (2) and heat shield (1)
21. Remove the bolt from the transmission filler tube and position the tube aside.
22. Disconnect the transmission vent hose from the transmission.
23. Remove transfer case, if equipped.
24. Support rear of engine with safety stand or jack.










25. Raise transmission slightly with service jack to relieve load on crossmember and supports.
26. Remove bolts securing rear support and cushion (2) to transmission and crossmember (1).
27. Remove bolts attaching crossmember to frame and remove crossmember.










28. Disconnect transmission fluid cooler lines (1) at transmission fittings (2) and clips (3).










29. Remove all remaining converter housing bolts (2).
30. Carefully work transmission and torque converter assembly rearward off engine block dowels.
31. Hold torque converter in place during transmission removal.
32. Lower transmission and remove assembly from under the vehicle.
33. To remove torque converter, carefully slide torque converter out of the transmission.
