Engine Control System - SFI System

2UR-FSE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0335: Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit

DTC P0335 - Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit

DTC P0337 - Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit Low Input

DTC P0338 - Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit High Input

DESCRIPTION

The crankshaft position sensor system consists of a crank angle sensor plate and Magnetic Resistance Element (MRE) type sensor. The crank angle sensor plate has 34 teeth at 10° intervals (2 teeth are missing for detecting top dead center), and is installed to the rear end of the crankshaft. The crankshaft position sensor outputs 34 rotation signals per engine revolution. The ECM uses the G2 signal to distinguish between the cylinders, and uses the NE signal to detect the crankshaft position and engine rpm.

- Reference: Inspection using an oscilloscope.

HINT: G2+ stands for the camshaft position sensor signal, and NE+ stands for the CKP sensor signal.

Standard

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

If there is no signal from the crankshaft position sensor despite the engine revolving, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction of the sensor.
When the sensor output voltage remains less than 0.3 V, or more than 4.7 V for more than 4 seconds, the ECM sets a DTC.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT:
- The engine speed can be checked by using the intelligent tester or Techstream. To check, follow the procedures below:
1 Connect the intelligent tester or Techstream to the DLC3.
2 Put the engine in inspection mode Inspection Mode Procedure.
3 Turn the tester ON.
4 Enter the following menus:
1 Intelligent tester - Select: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / PRIMARY / ENGINE SPD.
2 Techstream - Select: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Engine Speed.
- Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester or Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

1. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (SENSOR POWER SOURCE)

(a) Disconnect the E54 crankshaft position sensor connector.
(b) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard voltage:

NG -- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR - ECM)
OK -- Continue to next step.
2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR - ECM)

(a) Disconnect the E54 crankshaft position sensor connector.
(b) Disconnect the E1 ECM connector.
(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance (Check for open):

Standard resistance (Check for short):

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. CHECK SENSOR INSTALLATION (CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR)

(a) Check the crankshaft position sensor installation.
OK:
Sensor is installed correctly.
NG -- SECURELY REINSTALL
OK -- Continue to next step.
4. CHECK CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR PLATE (TEETH OF SENSOR PLATE)
(a) Check the teeth of the sensor plate.
OK:
Sensor plate does not have any crack or deformation.
NG -- REPLACE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR PLATE
OK -- Continue to next step.
5. REPLACE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
(a) Replace the crankshaft position sensor Testing and Inspection.
NEXT -- Continue to next step.
6. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0335, P0337 AND/OR P0338)
(a) Connect the intelligent tester or Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Put the engine in inspection mode Inspection Mode Procedure.
(c) Turn the tester ON.
(d) Clear DTCs DTC Check / Clear.
(e) Enter the following menus:
(1) Intelligent tester - Select: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DTC INFO / CURRENT CODES.
(2) Techstream - Select: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
(f) Read DTCs.

Result

HINT: If the engine does not start, replace the ECM.

B -- REPLACE ECM
A -- END

OK -- REPLACE ECM
