ENGINE MOUNTS - FRONT - NEW SERVICE PARTS WITH COMMON STUD SIZE - 5.0L ENGINE

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1982-84 CONTINENTAL, 1982-83 MARK VI, 1984 MARK VII

Figure 4 - TYPICAL FRONT ENGINE MOUNT:

The studs attaching the front engine mounts to the No. 2 crossmember were 12 mm diameter on 1982-84 model vehicles. However, on 1985 model vehicles, the stud size was increased to 14 mm. Service replacement mounts will have the larger 14 mm studs. In order to commonize the service replacement mount for crossmembers with 14 mm or 12 mm holes, the No. 2 crossmember hole will require modification on 1982- 84 model vehicles. When hole modification is required, use the following procedure. See Figure 4.
ENGINE FRONT SUPPORTS

Removal

1. Remove the fan shroud attaching screws.

2. Raise the vehicle on hoist.

3. Remove the one bolt retaining the flexible coupling to the input shaft.

4. Support the steering gear and remove the two nuts, insulator washers and bolts retaining the steering gear to the No. 2 crossmember. (Refer to procedures in the 1983 Car Shop Manual - Body Chassis Electrical Section 13-46.)

5. Support the engine using a jack and wood block placed under the engine.

6. Remove the nuts attaching the insulators to the No. 2 crossmember. (Refer to procedures in the 1983 Car Shop Manual - Powertrain Section 21-15.)

7. Raise the engine high enough to clear the insulator studs from the crossmember.

8. Remove the starter ground cable and oil cooler line attaching clips from the right hand engine support bracket.

9. Remove the bolts attaching the insulator and bracket assembly to engine. Remove the insulator and bracket assembly.

Figure 4 - TYPICAL FRONT ENGINE MOUNT:

10. The "teardrop" mounting holes on the No. 2 crossmember pedestal bracket must be modified 1 mm larger by filing or grinding in order for the
new insulator studs to seat properly. Refer to Figure 4.

NOTE: It is recommended that a 14 mm bolt be obtained and inserted into the modified hole to be sure adequate thread clearance is available.
Installation

1. Position the insulator and bracket assembly to the engine. Install the attaching bolts and tighten 45- 61 Nm (33-45 ft.lbs.).

2. Install the starter ground cable attaching clip to upper right hand front engine mount support bracket bolt and tighten to specification.

3. Install screw attaching oil cooler line clip to right hand engine mount support bracket.

4. Lower the engine in to position making sure that the insulators are seated flat on the No. 2 crossmember and that the insulator studs are at the bottom of the modified slots.

5. Install the insulators to the No. 2 crossmember using the attaching nut assemblies. Torque nuts to 108-144 Nm (80-106 ft.lbs.).

6. Install the fan shroud attaching screws and tighten to specification.
