Erratic Idle Causing Stalling (5.0L CFI)

Lincoln-Mercury
1982 Lincoln, Mark, Continental

High or low fast idle, high cam stalls or drive engagement stalls may be a result of a binding of the fast idle control rod positioner against the fast idle cam.

Service as follows:

1. Visually inspect the fast idle control rod to see if it is bent. The normal rod is made with a 90° right angle bend.
2. If the fast idle control rod is bent, check for a binding condition by slightly opening the throttle and moving the fast idle cam. The cam should move freely. If a binding condition exists between the rod and the cam, replace the fast idle control rod per Section 24-29-15, to 24-29-18, 1982 Car Shop Manual Powertrain Volume D, and Sections 24-29-30 to 24-29-33 of the same publication.
3. If the fast idle control rod is bent but no binding is experienced with the fast idle cam, service the control rod by carefully bending the rod back to the original 90° position using a pair of long nose pliers. After this, slightly open the throttle and move the fast idle cam and fast idle control rod. All parts should move freely.
4. Start the vehicle and observe the functioning of the parts in question. Insure the proper pull down function and rotation of the fast idle cam to the idle position.
