Pinpoint Test AF: No Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding
Normal Operation
The Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) uses an unshielded twisted pair cable.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) (if equipped)
- Audio Control Module (ACM)
- Audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP) module (if equipped)
- Driver Door Module (DDM) (if equipped)
- Driver Seat Module (DSM) (if equipped)
- Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM) (if equipped)
- Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM)
- Front Display Interface Module (FDIM)
- Global Positioning System Module (GPSM) (if equipped)
- Headlamp Control Module 2 (HCM-2) (if equipped)
- HVAC module (if equipped)
- Interior Lighting Control Module (ILCM) (if equipped)
- Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) (gateway module)
- Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module (if equipped)
- Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) (if equipped)
- Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) (if equipped)
- Smart Junction Box (SJB)
PINPOINT TEST AF : NO MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) COMMUNICATION, ALL MODULES ARE NOT RESPONDING
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
NOTE: Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough inspection and verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test. Module Communications Network
NOTE: Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings.
AF1 CHECK THE DLC (Data Link Connector) PINS FOR DAMAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect the scan tool cable from the Data Link Connector (DLC).
- Inspect DLC (Data Link Connector) pins 3 and 11 for damage.
Are DLC (Data Link Connector) pins 3 and 11 OK?
Yes
GO to AF2.
No
REPAIR the DLC (Data Link Connector) as necessary. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
AF2 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTANCE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance between 54 and 66 ohms?
Yes
GO to AF3.
No
GO to AF5.
AF3 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
GO to AF4.
No
GO to AF34.
AF4 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Connect: Negative Battery Cable.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Is the voltage greater than 6 volts?
Yes
REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
The MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) has tested within specifications. GO to Pinpoint Test AC to diagnose the intermittent MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) fault. Pinpoint Test AC: Intermittent No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, Can Be Intermittently Established
AF5 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTOR
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance between 108 and 132 ohms?
Yes
GO to AF6.
No
GO to AF9.
AF6 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTOR WITH THE SJB (Smart Junction Box) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Smart Junction Box (SJB) C2280B.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance between 108 and 132 ohms?
Yes
GO to AF7.
No
GO to AF8.
AF7 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE SJB (Smart Junction Box) AND THE DLC (Data Link Connector) FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between the SJB (Smart Junction Box) C2280B-37, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side.
- Measure the resistance between the SJB (Smart Junction Box) C2280B-38, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF57.
No
REPAIR the circuit in question. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
AF8 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) AND THE DLC (Data Link Connector) FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) C220.
- Measure the resistance between the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) C220-12, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side.
- Measure the resistance between the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) C220-13, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF65.
No
REPAIR the circuit in question. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
AF9 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AF11.
No
GO to AF10.
AF10 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
REPAIR the circuit in question. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
A capacitor internal to a module may still be draining causing irregular resistance readings. WAIT 5 minutes. REPEAT the pinpoint test.
AF11 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE SJB (Smart Junction Box) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: SJB (Smart Junction Box) C2280B.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with a Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module, GO to AF12.
If the vehicle is not equipped with an RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module, GO to AF13.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF57.
AF12 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: RFA (Remote Function Actuator) Module C2153D.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AF13.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF58.
AF13 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE ACM (Audio Control Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Audio Control Module (ACM) C240C.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with an audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP) module, GO to AF14.
If the vehicle is not equipped with an audio DSP (Digital Signal Processing) module, GO to AF15.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF59.
AF14 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE AUDIO DSP (Digital Signal Processing) MODULE DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Audio DSP (Digital Signal Processing) Module C4326A.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AF15.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF60.
AF15 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE FCIM (Front Controls Interface Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM) C2402.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with a Front Display Interface Module (FDIM), GO to AF16.
If the vehicle is not equipped with an FDIM (Front Display Interface Module), GO to AF17.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF61.
AF16 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE FDIM (Front Display Interface Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: FDIM (Front Display Interface Module) C2123.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AF17.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF62.
AF17 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE HVAC MODULE DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: HVAC Module C2356A or C228A.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with a Global Positioning System Module (GPSM), GO to AF18.
If the vehicle is not equipped with a GPSM (Global Positioning System Module), GO to AF19.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF63.
AF18 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) C2300.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AF19.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF64.
AF19 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) C220.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with an Interior Lighting Control Module (ILCM), GO to AF20.
If the vehicle is not equipped with an ILCM (Interior Lighting Control Module), GO to AF21.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF65.
AF20 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE ILCM (Interior Lighting Control Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: ILCM (Interior Lighting Control Module) C2411.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AF21.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF66.
AF21 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DSM (Driver Seat Module)
- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Driver Seat Module (DSM).
Is the vehicle equipped with a DSM (Driver Seat Module)?
Yes
GO to AF22.
No
GO to AF23.
AF22 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE DSM (Driver Seat Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: DSM (Driver Seat Module) C341D.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AF23.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF67.
AF23 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module)
- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM).
Is the vehicle equipped with a DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module)?
Yes
GO to AF24.
No
GO to AF25.
AF24 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) C3265C.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AF25.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AF68.
AF25 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module)
- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with an Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM).
Is the vehicle equipped with an APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module)?
Yes
GO to AF26.
No
GO to AF27.
