Oil Pan: Service and Repair

OIL PAN REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 2.3L

Removal

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See Lifting.

2. Remove the engine cooling fan. See - Cooling Fan And Clutch Removal / Installation.

3. Remove the oil level indicator and tube. See - Service and Repair.

NOTE:Only the LH side of the engine will be raised.Remove the LH engine support insulator-to-engine bracket nuts.






5. Install the lifting eyes SST.






6. Install the 3-Bar Engine Support Kit SST and raise the LH side of the engine approximately 25 mm (1 inch).






7. Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil. Install the drain plug when finished.Tightening torque:28 Nm {2.9 kgf-m, 21 ft-lbf}

8. Detach the wiring harness retainers from the engine front cover.

9. Remove the 4 engine front cover-to-oil pan bolts.

NOTE:Manual transmission shown, automatic transmission similar.Remove the transmission bracket-to-transmission bolts.

CAUTION:To prevent damage to the transmission, do not loosen the transmission-to-engine bolts more than 5 mm (0.19 inch).

Loosen the 7 transmission-to-engine bolts 5 mm (0.19 inch).






13. Slide the transmission rearward 5 mm (0.19 inch).

NOTE:If necessary, lift the rear of the transmission to remove the oil pan.Remove the 13 oil pan bolts and oil pan.

CAUTION:Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.Clean the sealing surfaces with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Observe all warnings and cautions and follow all application directions contained on the packaging of the silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep.

Installation

CAUTION:Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
NOTE:If not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing areas cleaned. To clean the sealing areas, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Observe all warnings and cautions and follow all application directions contained on the packaging of the silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure and cause future oil leakage.
NOTE:If necessary, lift the rear end of the transmission to install the oil pan.
Apply a 2.5 mm (0.1 inch) bead of silicone gasket and sealant to the oil pan. Position the oil pan and install the bolts finger tight.

2. Install the engine front cover-to-oil pan bolts.Tightening torque:10 Nm {1.0 kgf-m, 89 in-lbf}

3. Tighten the oil pan bolts in the sequence shown.




Tightening torque:25 Nm {2.5 kgf-m, 18 ft-lbf}

4. Attach the wiring harness retainers to the engine front cover.

NOTE:Manual transmission shown, automatic transmission similar.Slide the transmission forward and tighten the 7 transmission-to-engine bolts.




Tightening torque:48 Nm {4.9 kgf-m, 35 ft-lbf}

NOTE:Manual transmission shown, automatic transmission similar.Install the 4 transmission-to-oil pan bolts.




Tightening torque:48 Nm {4.9 kgf-m, 35 ft-lbf}

7. Install the transmission bracket-to-transmission bolts.




Tightening Torque:90 Nm {9.2 kgf-m, 66 ft-lbf}

8. Lower the engine and remove the 3-Bar Engine Support Kit SST and the Lifting Eyes SST.

9. Install the engine support insulator nuts.




Tightening Torque:102 Nm {10.4 kgf-m, 75 ft-lbf}

10. Install the oil level indicator and tube. See - Service and Repair.

11. Install the engine cooling fan. See - Cooling Fan And Clutch Removal / Installation.

12. Install a new oil filter.

13. Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
