* J 6125-1B Slide Hammer with Adapter
* J 38868 Output Shaft Assembly Remover and Installer
Removal Procedure
1. Remove the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement (Battery Tray Replacement).
2. Remove the shift control cable bracket. Refer to Shift Control Cable Bracket Replacement (Shift Control Cable Bracket Replacement).
3. Disconnect the electrical connector (4) from the input speed sensor.
4. Disconnect the electrical connectors (3, 5) from the transaxle range switch.
5. Remove the wire harness (2) from the transaxle range switch.
6. Remove the nut (6) securing the battery negative cable and wire harness ground to the transaxle stud.
7. Remove the battery negative cable and wire harness ground (1) from the transaxle stud.
8. Disconnect the electrical connector (2) from the output speed sensor.
9. Remove the nut and fuel line retaining clip (1) from the transaxle.
10. Disconnect the transaxle vent tube.
11. Secure the wire harness, vent hose, and shift cable up away from the transaxle.
12. Remove the upper 4 transaxle-to-engine bolts.
13. Tie the radiator, air conditioning condenser and fan module assembly to the upper radiator support to keep the assembly with the vehicle when the frame and drivetrain are removed.
14. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture (Engine Support Fixture).
15. Remove the left hand transaxle mount-to-transaxle bolts.
16. Remove the left hand transaxle mount-to-side rail bolts.
17. Remove the left hand transaxle mount from the vehicle.
18. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
19. Remove both front wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
20. Remove the left and right side engine splash shields. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement (Service and Repair).
21. Remove the steering intermediate shaft pinch bolt and discard the bolt.
22. Disconnect the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
23. Remove the right and left outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement (Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement).
24. Remove the right and left stabilizer shaft links from the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (Front Suspension).
25. Remove the right and left lower ball joints from the steering knuckles. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement (Front Suspension).
26. Remove the front bumper fascia air deflector. Refer to Front Bumper Fascia Air Deflector Replacement (Equinox) ()Front Bumper Fascia Air Deflector Replacement (SS) (Front Bumper Fascia Air Deflector Replacement (SS)).
27. Drain the transaxle fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Replacement (Removal and Replacement).
28. Remove the transaxle oil cooler lines and seals from the transaxle. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Pipe Seal Replacement (Service and Repair).
29. Remove the engine-to-transaxle brace bolts (1, 2) and brace (3).
30. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement (LNJ) (Service and Repair)Starter Replacement (LY7) (Service and Repair).
31. Turn the crankshaft balancer bolt clockwise to gain access to the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts through the starter motor hole.
Note: Mark the relation of the flywheel to torque converter for reassembly.
32. Remove the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts.
33. Remove the front engine mount. Refer to Engine Front Mount Replacement (Service and Repair).
34. Remove the through bolt (1) from the rear transaxle mount (3) and bracket (2).
35. Place a universal frame support fixture under the frame.
36. Lower the vehicle until the frame contacts the frame support fixture.
37. Remove the frame-to-body bolts. Discard the bolts.
38. Raise the vehicle up away from the frame and remove the frame from under the vehicle.
39. Disconnect the right and left drive shafts from the intermediate shaft and transaxle. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement (Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement). Secure both drive shafts out of the way.
40. Remove the intermediate shaft. Refer to Intermediate Shaft Replacement (Intermediate Shaft Replacement).
41. If vehicle is equipped with all wheel drive (AWD) complete the following steps:
1. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Service and Repair).
2. Remove the transfer case mounting bracket. Refer to Transfer Case Bracket Replacement (Transfer Case Bracket Replacement).
3. Disconnect the vent hose from the top of the transfer case.
42. Support the transaxle with a suitable transaxle jack.
43. Remove the 4 lower transaxle-to-engine bolts.
44. Slide the transaxle away from the engine until the transaxle torque-converter clears the flywheel.
45. If equipped with a drive axle seal dust cover, discard it and do not replace it.
46. Lower the transaxle away from the vehicle.
47. If the vehicle is equipped with AWD complete the following steps:
1. Remove the retaining ring from the stub shaft for tool installation. Discard the retainer ring.
2. Remove the stub shaft from the transfer case using the J 6125-1B and J 38868 .
3. Remove the bolts securing the transfer case to the transaxle.
4. Remove the transfer case from the transaxle.
48. If the vehicle is equipped with front wheel drive (FWD) complete the following steps:
1. Remove the bolts (1) securing the rear transaxle mount bracket to the transaxle.
2. Remove the rear transaxle mount bracket (2) from the transaxle.
Installation Procedure
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).
1. If the vehicle is equipped with FWD complete the following steps:
1. Install the rear transaxle mount bracket (2) to the transaxle.
2. Install the bolts (1) securing the rear transaxle mount bracket to the transaxle and tighten the bolts to 55 Nm (41 lb ft).
2. If the vehicle is equipped with AWD complete the following steps:
1. Install the transfer case to the transaxle.
2. Install the bolts securing the transfer case to the transaxle and tighten the bolts to 60 Nm (44 lb ft).
3. Install the stub shaft using the J 6125-1B and J 38868 .
4. Install a NEW retaining ring on the stub shaft.
3. Raise the transaxle up into the vehicle engine compartment.
4. Align and install the transaxle to the engine.
5. Install the 4 lower transaxle-to-engine bolts and tighten to 75 Nm (55 lb ft).
6. If the vehicle is equipped with AWD complete the following steps:
1. Connect the vent hose to the top of the transfer case.
2. Install the transfer case mounting bracket. Refer to Transfer Case Bracket Replacement (Transfer Case Bracket Replacement).
3. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Service and Repair).
7. Install the intermediate shaft. Refer to Intermediate Shaft Replacement (Intermediate Shaft Replacement).
8. Install the right and left drive shafts to the intermediate shaft and transaxle. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement (Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement).
9. Install the frame to the vehicle.
10. Install NEW frame-to-body bolts and tighten to 155 Nm (114 lb ft).
11. Install the bolt (1) through the rear transaxle mount (3) and transaxle mount bracket (2).
Tighten the bolt (1) to 110 Nm (80 lb ft).
12. Install the front engine mount. Refer to Engine Front Mount Replacement (Service and Repair).
13. Turn the crankshaft balancer bolt clockwise to gain access to the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts through the starter motor hole.
Note: Align the reference marks on the flywheel and torque converter.
14. Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts and tighten to 60 Nm (44 lb ft).
15. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement (LNJ) (Service and Repair)Starter Replacement (LY7) (Service and Repair).
16. Install the engine-to-transaxle brace (3).
17. Install the engine-to-transaxle brace bolts (1, 2) and tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
18. Install the transaxle oil cooler lines and seals to the transaxle. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Pipe Seal Replacement (Service and Repair).
19. Install the front bumper fascia air deflector. Refer to Front Bumper Fascia Air Deflector Replacement (Equinox) ()Front Bumper Fascia Air Deflector Replacement (SS) (Front Bumper Fascia Air Deflector Replacement (SS)).
20. Install the right and left lower ball joints to the steering knuckles. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement (Front Suspension).
21. Install the right and left stabilizer shaft links to the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (Front Suspension).
22. Install the right and left outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement (Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement).
23. Connect the steering intermediate shaft to the steering gear.
24. Install a NEW pinch bolt to the steering intermediate shaft and tighten the bolt to 34 Nm (25 lb ft).
25. Install the right and left side engine splash shields. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement (Service and Repair).
26. Install both front wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
27. Lower the vehicle.
28. Install the left hand transaxle mount to the vehicle.
29. Install the left hand transaxle mount-to-side rail bolts and tighten to 37 Nm (27 lb ft).
30. Install the left hand transaxle mount to transaxle bolts and tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
31. Remove the engine support fixture.
32. Untie the radiator, air conditioning condenser and fan module assembly from the upper radiator support.
33. Install the upper 4 transaxle-to-engine bolts and tighten to 75 Nm (55 lb ft).
34. Connect the transaxle vent tube.
35. Connect the electrical connector (2) to the output speed sensor.
36. Install the nut and fuel line retaining clip (1) to the transaxle and tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb in).
37. Install the battery negative cable and wire harness ground (1) to the transaxle stud.
38. Install the nut (6) securing the battery negative cable and wire harness ground to the transaxle stud.
Tighten the nut to 45 Nm (33 lb ft).
39. Connect the electrical connectors (3, 5) to the transaxle range switch.
40. Connect the electrical connector (4) from the input speed sensor.
41. Install the shift control cable bracket. Refer to Shift Control Cable Bracket Replacement (Shift Control Cable Bracket Replacement).
42. Install the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement (Battery Tray Replacement).
43. Fill the transaxle with fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Replacement (Removal and Replacement).
44. Perform the transmission adaptive learn procedure. Refer to Transmission Adaptive Learn and Transmission Neutral Learn (AF33-5 Automatic Transaxle).
