ENGINE FRONT COVER REPLACEMENT

Removal Procedure
1. Remove the lower intake manifold. Service and Repair
2. Remove the camshaft covers. Service and Repair
3. Drain the engine coolant. Service and Repair
4. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Service and Repair
5. Remove the water pump. Service and Repair
6. Remove the power steering pump and position aside. Service and Repair
7. Remove the camshaft position sensors. Service and Repair
8. Remove the camshaft position actuator solenoid valves from the front cover. Service and Repair
9. Remove the generator. Service and Repair
10. Remove the water outlet housing. Service and Repair
11. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Clean front cover of components first before installing a support fixture.
12. Insert a block of hard wood between frame and engine before using support fixture. lower engine onto block of wood. remove lift hook and strut mount bracket from the front cover.
13. Remove the engine front cover bolts.
14. Loosely install a 10 x 1.5 mm bolt in the "jackscrew" hole (1).
15. Using the pry points (2) located at the edge of the front cover and the "jackscrew", shear the RTV sealant.

17. Using the EN 46111, rotate the crankshaft until the left cylinder head camshafts align with the EN 46105-2 and the right cylinder head camshafts align with the EN 46105-1.
18. Install the EN 46105-1 to the right camshafts.
19. Install the EN 46105-2 to the left camshafts.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the 8 mm (0.315 in) guide from the EN 46109 into the cylinder block positions as shown.
2. Install the engine front cover to cylinder block seal.
3. Place a 3 mm (0.118 in) bead of RTV sealant, GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148) or equivalent, on the engine front cover as shown (1).
4. Place the engine front cover onto the EN 46109 and slide into position. 122. Engine Front Cover Installation
5. Remove the EN 46109 from the cylinder block.
6. Hand start all the front cover bolts.
Caution: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners, or fastener joint surfaces, unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems. When using fasteners that are threaded directly into plastic, use extreme care not to strip the mating plastic part(s). Use hand tools only, and do not use any kind of impact or power tools. Fastener should be hand tightened, fully seated, and not stripped.
7. Tighten the engine front cover bolts in the sequence shown.
Tighten the engine front cover bolts in sequence to 23 Nm (17 lb ft).
8. Install the engine oil pan. Service and Repair

12. Install the camshaft position actuator solenoid valves to the front cover. Service and Repair

15. Install the power steering pump and position aside. Service and Repair

20. Refill the engine coolant. Service and Repair
