Engine Lubrication: Service and Repair
Lubrication System Overviews
• If large quantities of metal particles or abraded material are detected during engine repairs, it may mean the crankshaft or rod bearings are damaged. To prevent further damage, perform the following steps after the repair:
• Clean the oil passages.
• Replace the oil spray jets.
• Replace the oil cooler.
• Replace the oil filter.
• The oil level must not go above the MAX mark - danger of causing damage to the catalytic converter!

Oil Pan
1 Bolt
• 15 Nm
2 Oil Dipstick
• Marks, refer to => [ Marks on the Oil Dipstick: ] Description and Operation.
• Oil level must not be above the MAX. mark!
3 Inlet Spout
4 Guide Tube
5 Intermediate Plate
6 Oil Pump with Balance Shaft Drive
• With a pressure relief valve of 12 bar.
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Oil Pump with Balance Shaft Drive ] Service and Repair.
7 Bolt
• 15 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
• Always replace
• Note the different length of the bolts, refer to => [ Balance Shaft Drive Bolt Allocation ] Service and Repair.
8 Bolt
• 15 Nm
9 Bolt
• 8 Nm
• For the charge air pipe.
10 Oil Pan
• Clean the sealing surface before installing.
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Oil Pan ] Service and Repair.
11 Bolt
• 15 Nm
12 Oil Drain Plug
• 30 Nm
• Always replace.
• With a permanent sealing ring.
13 Chain Sprocket
14 Bolt
• 10 Nm
• Not available in the US/Canadian market.
15 Protective Cap
• Not available in the US/Canadian market.
16 Oil Level Thermal Sensor (G266)
• Not available in the US/Canadian market.
17 Seal
• Always replace.
• Lubricate before installing.
• Not available in the US/Canadian market.
18 Bolt
• 20 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
• Always replace.
19 Chain Guard

21 Sealing Flange
• Must be located on the alignment pins.
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Sealing Flange, Belt Pulley Side ] Sealing Flange, Belt Pulley Side.
• To remove and install, remove the oil pan. Refer to => [ Oil Pan ] Service and Repair.
• Crankshaft seal, belt pulley side, replacing. Refer to => [ Crankshaft Seal, Belt Pulley Side ] Service and Repair.
Oil Pump with Balance Shaft Drive
1 Chain Guard
2 Chain
• Mark the direction of travel (installed position) using a colored mark before removing.
3 Alignment Sleeve

• Before installing, check to be sure both alignment sleeves are present for centering.
6 Bolt
• 9 Nm
7 Cover
• Prevents the engine oil from foaming up.
8 Bolt
• 40 Nm

10 Oil Intake Pipe
• Clean the screen if it is dirty.
11 O-ring
• Always replace.
12 Bolt
• 15 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
• Always replace.
• Note the different length of the bolts. Refer to => [ Balance Shaft Drive Bolt Allocation ] Service and Repair.
13 Outer Rotor
• Check the contact surfaces for groove buildup.
• The mark must be visible.
14 Inner Rotor
• Check the contact surfaces for groove buildup.
15 Oil Pump Cover
16 Chain Sprocket
17 Bolt
• 20 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
• Always replace.
18 Chain Tensioner with Tensioning Rail
• Preload, refer to => [ Chain Tensioner, Pretensioning ] Service and Repair to install.
19 Bolt
• 15 Nm
Oil Filter Bracket
1 Pipe
• For the crankcase ventilation.
2 Oil Pressure Switch (F1)
• 20 Nm
• 1.4 bar, black.
• Checking, refer to one of the following:
• => [ Oil Pressure and Pressure, Checking, with a 1 Pin Switch ] Oil Pressure and Pressure, Checking, with a 1 Pin Switch.
• => [ Oil Pressure and Switch, Checking, with a 2 Pin Switch ] Oil Pressure and Switch, Checking, with a 2 Pin Switch.
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Oil Pressure Switch (F1) ] Service and Repair.
• With the ground wire for the oil pressure switch (only for the 1 pin oil pressure switch).
3 Bolt
• 15 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
• Always replace.
• With the ground wire for the oil pressure switch (only for the 1 pin oil pressure switch).
4 Bracket
5 Bolt
• 25 Nm
6 Oil Cooler
• See the note in => [ Lubrication System Overviews ] Service and Repair.
• Ensure sufficient clearance to surrounding components.
7 Gasket
• Always replace.
8 Bolt
• 15 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
• Always replace.
9 Seal
• Always replace
• Install with lubricant.
• Service flag upward.
10 Dust Cap
11 Oil Filter Housing
• 25 Nm
• Remove and install using the oil filter wrench (3417).
• Draining, refer to => [ Oil Filter Housing, Draining ] Service and Repair.
12 Oil Filter Element
• Drain the oil filter housing before removing. Refer to => [ Oil Filter Housing, Draining ] Service and Repair.
13 Oil Baffle
14 Gasket
• Always replace.
15 Oil Filter Bracket
• With the pressure relief valve, approximately 4 bar.
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Oil Filter Bracket ] Removal and Replacement.
