Automatic Transmission Fluid Level, Checking and Filling

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Used Oil Collection and Extraction Device (V.A.G 1782)
• Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing, and Information System (VAS 5051)
• Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)
• Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6262)
• Adapter for Filling ATF Oil (VAS 6262/2)
If ATF is filled, only use ATF available as a replacement part.
- If the ATF level is checked, the seal - arrow - on the ATF inspection plug must always be replaced.
Checking
- Turn off the engine.
The ATF temperature must not be more than approximately 30 °C (86 °F) at the start of the test.
• Transmission is not in the emergency running, ATF temperature not above approximately 30° C (86 °F).
• Vehicles is on a flat, level surface.
• The selector level is in the "P" position.
- Connect the vehicle tester and scroll through the selections until it is ready for operation. Refer to => [ Vehicle Tester, Connecting and Selecting Functions ] Scan Tool Testing and Procedures.
- Press the right button Guided Functions.
- Then select the vehicle, transmission and Check ATF Level.
- Press ->.
- Start the engine.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Place an appropriate receptacle underneath the transmission.
- Press ->.
If the test temperature shown is 35 to 45 °C (95 to 113 °F):
- Remove the inspection plug from the oil pan to check the ATF.
The ATF present in the overflow tube runs out.
If the ATF continues to drain out of the hole:
The ATF does not need to be topped off.
- Install the inspection plug with a new seal to 27 Nm. The ATF check is now completed.
If no ATF drains from the hole:
- Fill the ATF.
Filling
- Install the (VAS 6262/2) hand tight with engine the running.
- Fill with 1 liter of ATF.
- Install the (VAS 6262) to the quick release coupling and check:
If the ATF drains out of the hole:
The ATF does not need to be topped off.
- Allow the ATF to drain until it drips.
- Install the inspection plug with a new seal to 27 Nm. The ATF check is now completed.
If the ATF does not drain out:
- Fill with another liter of ATF.
CAUTION!
If the ATF level is too high or too low it will adversely affect the operation of the transmission. If 2 liters are missing, you should check the transmission more closely. There is probably a larger leak.
