Engine - Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair






Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench 5-50 Nm (VAG 1331)

Removing

Conditions

Engine is cold.

Procedure

- Remove the cover for the air guide; disengage the side clips to do so - arrows -.





- Unclip the lower air guide, disengage the clips to do so - arrows -.





- Remove the lower air guide together with the air guide hose.

- Remove the charge air pipe leading to the noise generator. Refer to --> [ Charge Air Pipe to Noise Generator ] Service and Repair.

- Loosen the charge air pipe clamp - 2 -.





- Remove the charge air pipe bolt - 4 -.

- Disconnect the electrical connector - arrow - from the charge air pressure sensor.

- Remove the noise insulation..

- Disconnect the charge air hose by lifting the clamp - 1 - and loosening the clamp - 2 -.





- Seal off the connections on the charge air cooler with a clean cloth.

- Remove the charge air pipe bolt - 1 - and remove the charge air pipe downward.





- Remove the throttle valve control module. Refer to --> [ Throttle Valve Control Module ] Removal and Replacement.

- Remove the intake manifold support by removing the nut - 2 - and bolt - 1 -.





- Disconnect the electrical connector - 1 - for the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.





Lay a cloth below to catch any leaking coolant.

- Remove the clamp, to do so, press the latches - arrow -.

- Remove the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor - 2 -

Installing

Tightening specifications, refer to the following:

Install in reverse order of removal. When doing this note the following:

Replace the O-ring.

To prevent coolant loss, immediately insert a new ECT sensor in the connecting piece.

- Clean the O-ring sealing surface.

- Check the coolant level. Refer to --> [ Draining and Filling ] [1][2]Cooling System, Draining and Filling.
