Power Convertible Top

The following table lists the possible convertible top malfunctions that are stored as DTCs by the convertible top control module -J256-. These DTCs are stored in the control module's memory and can be displayed using the VAG1551 scan tool.

The text listed with the DTC in the table will only be displayed starting with VAG1551 program card version 4.0. On prior card versions, only the DTCs shown in parentheses will be displayed.

If a malfunction occurs sporadically, or if DTC memory was not erased after a malfunction was repaired, these DTCs will be displayed as "sporadic" and indicated by "/SP" on the right side of the VAG1551 scan tool display.

If a component is diagnosed as malfunctioning, check wires to the component for a short circuit and/or open circuit in the wiring per the wiring diagram.

For the malfunction "Open circuit:"
- Check connector terminals for corrosion.
- Disconnect, then reconnect connector and repeat function check.

Before repairing a malfunction or replacing a component:
- Check convertible top control module -J256- connector D, terminals D5, D7 and D16 for continuity to ground (GND) See wiring diagram.

Specification: 0-1 Ohm (continuity)

If a component is recognized as malfunctioning by the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) program, always check component before replacing Power Convertible Top Sequence Test

Carry out the Automatic Test Sequence (address word 00) each time before the start of and at the end of troubleshooting. DTC memory in all systems with rapid data transfer will be checked.


NOTE: If the malfunction "Supply voltage (B+)/SP" is stored in another system with OBD, the malfunction "incorrect signal" for control module -J256- can be attributed to the supply voltage malfunction.

NOTE: This DTC wilt be displayed when no actuator is activated during 080 function Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) when VAG1551 scan tool program cards prior to version 4.0 are used.
